I have a single core 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 that I upgraded today to a hex core X5675 CPU. This evening, I received a dual CPU tray from eBay, that was supposed to be a 2009 CPU tray. I installed it, and of course the fans are running full speed, but it boots fine, and the system information states it is a 5,1 tray! Now, I am new at this, so I will post the pictures of About This Mac, and the System Info screen. The SMC version of the system is 1.39f11. and the SMC for the Processor tray is 1.3915. What do I have here? Geekbench shows mid-2012 for the single 6 core CPU, and mid 2010 for the dual CPU board. I am excited to think tht I may have a 5,1 dual CPU tray here, but someone else might be able to look at the serial #'s etc. for each, and tell me what I have here. Either way, the CPU in the dual tray are quad core 2.66Ghz CPu's.

Also, running the Mac Pro 2009-2010 Firmware upgrade tool, it wants to downgrade to 4,1 instead of upgrade the SMC. So, either I have a 2009 tray that was flashed to 5,1, or I have a genuine 2010-2012 CPU tray.

Your CPU tray is from a 2009 model and your board is either a 2010 or 2012. They both need to have the same SMC firmware or the fans will run full tilt. There's no way around this than to replace the tray with either a 2010 or 2012 tray. There are many threads on this site you can read, just try a search and see what it yields. This has been discussed to death here.

Thanks, Alex I don't know how to tell the 2009 tray, from the identification of SMC version? Is the 1.3915 SMC in the Processor tray the 2009 SMC version? My single CPU tray has the same SMC version as the system, 1.39f11, so I guess the earlier tray would have the 1.3915 version. It runs great, just fans at full speed. I got the dual CPU tray at a bargain price of $100, and when I run the MAc Pro EFI update tool, for 5,1 it states my hardware doesn't support this version. When I run the Mac Pro 2009-2010 update tool, it wants to revert back to 4,1 and not upgrade the CPU tray to 5,1... It is confusing me!! LOL Any way, if you are sure this is a 2009 Dual CPU Tray, that's cool, I wanted to find out how to tell from serial number or SMC version. Is there a reference here somewhere that would tell me how to determine which board I have? And, thanks again!
Charlie

You really shouldn’t post pictures that include your serial numbers, unless you want to soon have even more problems.

The SMC mismatch causes the fans issue. You can’t upgrade the SMC on the processor tray. You have to buy a tray from a GENUINE 2010-2012 to fix the issue.

Send the tray back for a refund, or sell it on ebay and purchase the correct tray with the proceeds.

The 1.39f5 is the 2009 firmware, so the tray you have needs to have the same firmware as your board. 1.39f11. All trays from 2010 and 2012 Pros will work with your board. You have a 2010 board, but either a 2010 or 2012 tray will work in your tower. They were identical except for the CPU offerings Apple had at the time. Fans can't be stopped if the tray and board don't match, unless you jam a pencil in them. This is not an option, so get a replacement tray.

Exactly what crjackson is telling you. Definitely edit those photos to remove your serial number.

Appreciate the info, photos have been deleted.
I will put the board up for sale, and get a dual processor 2010-2012 board from eBay. Sometimes, it may be cheaper to purchase a 2010 5,1 with a dual cpu board, than to try and purchase the board only!
