Mac Pro A1186 2113

hi everyone

i have recently bought a mac pro model (A1186 2113) with intel xeon 5150 and 2gb of ram and a 250 hard drive.

after using it for a few days i noticed some issues

1) won't boot unless you try it for a few times. i read about this online and they said something with capacitors or power supply to be replaced.

2) the computer can not update past mac os 10.7.5 even though the model and the CPU is 64 bit compatible https://ark.intel.com/products/27218/Intel-Xeon-Processor-5150-4M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB.

3) i can not update past firmware 2.1. is this why i can not go past mac os 10.7.5

i do not know what to do can anyone help me and guide me in the right direction.

Welcome aboard.

Search the forums - we have threads covering all of your issues. You need as very simple software hack to get around the later installers. The firmware won't take you past 2,1 because the 3,1 uses the Harpertown CPU.

You won't be able to do squat with 2Gb of ram - go to ebay, you can pick up 16Gb (4x4Gb) for about $30. You can also pick up a Hard drive that already has the software hack for about 35 - 40 dollars.

Once you move past 10.7.5, you will probably need a new video card; the Nvidia 120GT was a problematic card (they die a lot). We have plenty of threads here on upgrading your Mac Pro video card - from simple drop in replacements to OMG, are you kidding me! A lot will depend on what you want to do with your computer.
