My Mac Pro is taking ages to startup. The actual boot into OSX is reasonably quick, but then it sits there for anything upto 20 minutes indexing spotlight which results in the machine being extremely slow and painful use. I have the iStat menu bar and it clearly shows one of the 4 cores at 100% for a period of time before swapping to another core. Is this normal on a Mac Pro? I don't get this behaviour on my Mac Book Pro.

Thanks.

What about turning off spotlight? Do you use it on a constant basis?

I turn mine off because I don't have a use for Spotlight and even with it turned off, I still get good results with it off and searching within finder.

P.S. and to do this is to go to System Preferences and go to Spotlight. Uncheck everything. Worth a try anyways just to see if it's spotlight or something deeper in the OS.
