I have a Intel mac pro we use as a file server. Has anyone ever configured five or more drives in raid 5 under OSX, with no RAID hardware card? It seems to me the Mac O/s and hard ware should be a killer raid 5 server. I understand it would not have the disk management application for sensing a failed drive, but the only good raid cards I can find cost $800 to $950.

OS X's software RAID cannot run RAID 5. 🙁
Hardware is required. But, depending on exactly what you need, you can find a less expensive card. 😉
