Starting today, customers who purchase a Mac Pro can choose to add a Radeon Pro W5700X graphics card with 16GB of GDDR6 memory to their machines when using Apple's build-to-order feature, a new option that was just added.

When the Mac Pro was released, Apple said that the W5700X graphics card option would be coming in the near future, but it has taken a few months for it to show up.

Selecting the Radeon Pro W5700X adds an additional $600 to the price of the Mac Pro, with Apple also offering an option to add two Radeon Pro W5700X graphics cards for a total of $1,600. It's also available as a standalone purchase for $1,000.

These graphic card options are in addition to the default Radeon Pro 580X and Radeon Pro Vega II and Duo options that were already available.

Likely +$400 for the standalone version. So probably $1K. ( $400 gap for Vega II models respectively ).
Not an entry level card but more affordable than the Vega II 'Solo'.

Is this basically work station version of the 5700xt?

Bump of another 8GB of VRAM (and adding of the two Thunderbolt controllers ) , but same base silicon die for the GPU chip itself. Apple's TFLOP number is slightly lower than AMD's specs for 5700XT ( 9.4 vs 9.75 ), so clock may be slightly lower ( or Apple's number less a "theoretical peak". ).

BOUGHT IT:

  • 3.3GHz 12‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 2TB SSD storage
  • Stainless steel frame with feet
  • Magic Trackpad 2
  • Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English
  • Accessory Kit

ADVICE NEEDED:

I want to upgrade the RAM and I know Apple does not recommend mixing RAM sizes and also recommends using either 6 or 12 slots for best performance - that being said:

What would be the best configuration to upgrade to 96 GB RAM?

12 slots using 8GB R-DIMM, which would allow me to keep the 32 GB provided by Apple but would also take up all the available slots and, should I want to upgrade in the future, would cause me to have to reconfigure all the slots;

or

Trade-in the 32GB that comes with the 7,1 and just purchase a 16x6 kit (thus leaving me 6 open slots for future expansion)?

Finally, is the general consensus here to use OWC RAM or are there other sellers whom this forum trusts?

Thank you.

(I AM BEYOND EXCITED)

If the 8GB DIMM's are cheep enough I would buy those. When you are upgrading you might find it saves you money to replace the whole lot.

I found it standalone! The buy button seems to be greyed out though?

I think I am going to wait for the unannounced 5900 though that has RDNA 2, I need real time ray tracing!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well
According to OWC, they will give me $100 for the 32GB that it comes with

I really wanted this at the time of release, but I am glad Apple made it available. Nice to be able to drop this in.
75% of the 2080Ti for the same price, not bad for Apple. Hopefully we will get third party options as well.

I did that exactly and it is working perfectly! Watch this video, it tells you how to use mixed RAM slots. I now have 96GB of RAM.

The buy button was greyed out on the Vega II models when the Mac Pro was initially released also. The initial supply of the cards will fill BTO orders. When start to have a surplus then will add standalone. May or may not take the month or so like timeline for that to happen if Mac Pro purchases are down and this isn't as popular as much of the discussions about the card.

I think I am going to wait for the unannounced 5900 though that has RDNA 2, I need real time ray tracing!

That presumes that Apple/AMD are going to have Metal drivers for RDNA2 any time soon. Adapting to whatever software/hardware blend AMD didn't for real time ray tracing may/may not come to macOS quickly.

( AMD did a release in July 2019 for mainstream 5700 based cards. And it took into 2020 for the to arrive. There is also likely no big "RDNA2" product driver in the laptop space either where a MBP pulls along driver development. )

The standalone model will cost $1000. So $600 + $1000 = $1600. Nothing strange about that math at all.

You are getting a "$400" credit for swapping out the 580X. In the case of the second card there is no 580X to swap with.

If look at the standalone Vega II cards there is a $400 bump there.
I stand corrected. I forgot about the credit...
