X-plane is switching to Metal on the Mac. Supposedly it will boost frame rates by up to 20 %.
i love mac os but apple decision to go with AMD forced me back to windows, new games will come with nvidia DLSS 2.0 and windows 10 next update will bring Direct x 12 ultimate, i understand when ray tracing first came out, it was a new technology and developers were still figuring out how to use RT without impacting performance, now after a year or 2 things are much better now, RT make the game look awesome, that’s why i can’t use AMD and since i don’t use AMD i can’t use mac os, thanks to mr cook and company, but i got over it, it is what it is

is obvious they don’t care about mac os, regardless of what mr cook says, if they really care they wouldn’t do this, but is their loss anyway, many people will simply move to a windows pc and that will make mac os market share even smaller

Again, NVIDIA isn’t the end all, be all. If that is your sole determiner, then good luck. You better hope they don’t hit any sort of technical walls

I find it interesting that both Sony and Microsoft chose AMD for their next gen consoles and nothing from NVIDIA.

Good luck!

As has been proven, AMD's CPU strategy has paid off in the long run as they are now spanking Intel on pretty much all fronts. That alone should prove that nVidia had better be at the top of their game; AMD could do the same thing on the GPU side.

Dr. Lisa Su has done a superb job of dragging AMD out of debt and showing that they are a serious contender.

That being said, Apple should also not be putting all the eggs in one basket.

everybody is making the same mistake and counting intel out, don’t write them
off yet, once they fix their falicities, intel will come back strong with a vengeance, i’m not saying that AMD is bad or anything like that but their CPU lacks a ton of new features, like AI and things like AVX512, the same goes for their GPUs no ray tracing, no DLSS 2.0 and the only reason why AMD might get ray tracing is thanks to DX12U and the reason why, is because microsoft is integrating a lot of nvidia techniques or features in DX12U, the reason why console manufactuer has to choose AMD is simply to try to keep the price afordable or in a reasonable range, if they choose nvidia they will have to increase the price and they are afraid that will have an impact on sales, not to mention profit, they will have to ask for more money so they can make their money, so is better they go with AMD, i’m sure AMD don’t have any problem telling other companies how their hardware works while nvidia might not want to share that information because they don’t want to reveal their secrets

if AMD would it come out with a GPU that has RT support then i would it have bought it, that way i can run both mac and windows, but that never happened, i don’t mean any disrespect to any AMD fan but i don’t like AMD featureless hardware

nvidia 3000 series is going to crush AMD. it seems like AMD CPU deparment is doing a better job than AMD GPU deparment

but then again nvidia doesn’t have the same problem intel has

Let's not forget that AMD only recently struck out against Intel's high end laptop CPUs in the last couple months. It will simply take time to erode Intel's market lead, and that time is what gives Intel a chance to course correct.

Although I don't disagree that AMD is playing at a disadvantage here, I'm scratching my head on how we're talking about consumer card comparisons in a thread about a workstation card. The use cases are different, so some tech doesn't really apply all that well. DLSS upscaling and Ray Tracing (at least not the consumer implementation RTX cards have) in particular aren't useful in the workstation space. So at least in the workstation space, the absence of these things doesn't really matter here. And at least with the Nvidia card the W5700(X) is up against in the price bracket, isn't a slouch.

But generally, AMD's biggest problem here is that it seems to take them a year to trickle out a product line, while Nvidia has a whole product line ready to go all at once, and AMD tends to lack a good flagship to rival Nvidia's high end. The WX 9100 is a good card, but no match for the Quadro RTX 8000. Sure, it's half the cost, but if I'm willing to slap down 5k on a workstation GPU, AMD simply doesn't have anything that can hold up to the high-end Quadros. The RX 5900 XT (and presumably the WX 9100 replacement being a W5900XT or something) will likely come out around the time of the 3000 series launch from Nvidia.

It's kinda hard to beat a world-class sprinter by jogging in a 800m dash.

Ok, AMD is relevant, but at least use decent solutions they can offer (5600XT and 5700 series).
On GPUs Apple is lagging behind since long time ago.

What's scary about that is Windows has become pretty useable.

nvidia cards are not good just for gaming, i’m not talking about the quadro line os titans RTX , i’m talking about the regular gaming cards, they can also be use for encoding aka reendering, h265 is super fast with those cards using cuda, not only will you save space with smaller files but also save time while doing the job and processing the files, depending on the app you use and also the quality preset or settings, while some cards are just for one thing or the other, these cards can be use for both purposes, the RTX titan are not gaming card but they can have a decent performance if someone decide to play a game, i think video cards should have a good balance betwwen both options but i know and understand that some cards are just for work while others are just for gaming

The W5700x is suppose to have twice the bandwidth for hardware encoding H.264 and HVEC (H.265) than the previous generation AMD cards. So I am expecting a pretty big jump in that area once the benchmarks are out.

No Windows has not become pretty usable! What are you smoking? You must only use the Adobe Cloud suite or something like that! lol

These people always exist. You can't rationalize with them. Barefeats and so many professional Mac users are happy to admit that all cross platform apps and games are more usable and faster on Windows thanks to better drivers and mature APIs. You lose curved corners on your windows and no column view in the File Explorer. Everything else is a win on Windows.

Why are you even here? The is a Mac Rumors forum! Do you even have a Mac? I am not even going to waste my time! It is the software and its usability that matters. Whatever you think you are gaining in performance you are losing 10 to 100 times that in usability! AMD has passed NVIDIA in performance, both the new Playstation and Xbox are using AMD!

Don't inject disinfectant again please.

meh, once you are using the apps, they all work the same on both platforms. Personally I find normal day to day stuff and file system navigation to be a lot better and more consistent on the Mac across the board than Windows10. I also think that the system preferences are way better on the Mac at the expense of lots of flexibility that Windows offers. But to each their own, use what works for you.

Sadly, I didn’t find this on my Mac Pro.

How would you rate the graphics of Xplane on the VEGA vs the WX5700X ?

CUDA isn't really anything that special. Every single app that uses CUDA could be coded to use Metal. It is just a question on how stubborn the developer is. CUDA was good because of cross platform use though; but that bridge has crumbled so if you must use a Mac, might as well learn how to code using Metal APIs if you want things to be fast.
If enough people clamored for this, then it would be sold. They'd be crazy not to!

I can’t compare the two because I never used the WX5700X. I will note that X-plane gives me 40-50 FPS with graphics set pretty high. This is the Vega 20 with only 4 gigs of video ram.

I can't get 30 FPS with x-plane for me.. but I have the base card. Hopefully the new card will give me a bump

Barefeats has some benchmarks now on the new WX5700 and it looks to have been the right choice to have waited for it. Although I may wait even longer to see what AMD releases this year. Of course waiting for Apple to make a MPX module could be a long long wait.

BOUGHT IT:

  • 3.3GHz 12‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 2TB SSD storage
  • Stainless steel frame with feet
  • Magic Trackpad 2
  • Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English
  • Accessory Kit

ADVICE NEEDED:

I want to upgrade the RAM and I know Apple does not recommend mixing RAM sizes and also recommends using either 6 or 12 slots for best performance - that being said:

What would be the best configuration to upgrade to 96 GB RAM?

12 slots using 8GB R-DIMM, which would allow me to keep the 32 GB provided by Apple but would also take up all the available slots and, should I want to upgrade in the future, would cause me to have to reconfigure all the slots;

or

Trade-in the 32GB that comes with the 7,1 and just purchase a 16x6 kit (thus leaving me 6 open slots for future expansion)?

Finally, is the general consensus here to use OWC RAM or are there other sellers whom this forum trusts?

Thank you.

(I AM BEYOND EXCITED)
Probably a little late on the reply to this:

OWC also sells "Original Mac" RAM modules for the Mac Pro 7,1 (2019) and currently (as of 2024.01.04) has them in their "Garage Sale" for a less than the OWC-branded modules. I would say as long as both the existing and potential RAM modules match each other (type and speed) you should be fine.

If you have the money it might be better to get the smaller number of larger modules for the exact reason you stated: future upgradability. I personally have a very similar unit and went from 96GB to 192GB, filling out all my slots - I cannot foresee actually needing any more than that in the NEAR future and when it might be useful will be a few years down the road - at which time the RAM modules will have fallen drastically in price and won't be as much of an issue pricewise.

Hope this was somewhat timely or at least useful for a someone else.
