Hey all - I just upgrade my 2009 Mac pro (4,1) to a dual CPU (12-core), new tray, etc.
- 16gb ram, 1066 mhz.
- Nvidia GTX 980ti 6gb

I upgraded the firmware to 5,1, wiped the drive (SSD), and went from OSX 10.11 to 10.13.

I have 10.13 on my laptop, it's not great, but it runs way better than this Mac Pro desktop. After installing the new OS, the performance is complete crap. I can't tell if the performance is related to putting in the new CPU/tray, or just the OS upgrade.

There is a LAG with everything. Almost every action causes the little beachball to show up. For example, if i right click on the recycle bin, it waits a few seconds, then the animation stutters and the menu pops up.

I have tried:
- resetting the PRAM
- reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers (that helped a little actually)

Performance was never like this when i had OSX 10.11. Even with the new CPU installed, I ran 10.11 for a few days and did not have issues like this.

Worth noting, in my system info, the Memory is listed as: 16gb 1333 MHZ DDR3.
I do not have 1333 MHZ ram. I have a photo of the info screen pre-upgrade, and the ram is listed as 1066MHZ. Would the OS overclock the ram?? If so, that is most likely the issue. Is there a way to downgrade that?

Outside of that, could this really be related to OSX 10.13 being a turd? Or does the fact that i have this new hardware not play well with the new OSX?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I believe that you did't install / select / allow the Nvidia web driver correctly.

1) Make sure your SIP is enabled
2) Check system preference -> security, the web driver may be pending at there

Anyway, most likely your RAM is 1333 RAM from the very beginning, but just limited to 1066 by the 4,1 firmware or your old CPU. Once you remove that limited, they can now run at 1333. This sounds perfectly normal to me.

If there is any sticker on your DIMM, you may go to have a look, the speed should be there.
