I know Intel included support for it, but I haven't seen anything official from Apple. Nor on the ability to use 1333MHz memory with the X5550 & X5560.

However, my instincts tell me the 32GB option would be Registered, and 1066 was selected for cost & a unified parts sustem.

I think so too. I mean I don't see any 4GB ECC UDIMMs and that ASUS board that was linked to was 96GB RDIMM and 24GB UDIMM, but then you can get 4GB non-ECC UDIMMs.

You'd probably want registered with those sizes anyway.

4GB is the highest I've seen available so far. (Crucial). But I do recall seeing an article that Samsung had shrunk the die to 50nm, and would be capable of making chips for 8 & 16GB sticks.

As someone who has used Crucial in my PC's for a long time (their performance sticks), I'd say go with Crucial. They're part of Micron and they have lifetime warranty on their RAM, and they've got great customer service .

Do the new Mac Pros support Registered memory? I assume they do but is there any official confirmation?

Single socket MP probably uses ECC un-buffered (non-registered) memory, Dual sockets MP uses ECC buffered one.

Both the Quad and Octo's memory pricing would mean Unbuffered. 3GB's go for $150, and Registered is 2x that at Crucial.

The exception being the 32GB option. At $6100, it had better be Registered. :p And Crucial offers 4GB Registered sticks at $187 each. Definitely cheaper. ;)

The article made no mention of the 32GB DIMM for some reason, so I left it out.

being that Samsung took years to release an 8GB FB-DIMM after they said they would I guess it would be prudent to ignore them until they deliver.

Well, it's a limited market (servers typically), when compared to it's desktop variants, so it's to be expected IMO. ;)

With server board on an E-ATX/EEB form factor, enough DIMM slots can be included, that 4GB or 8GB sticks will be large enough for many applications (72/144GB respectively @ 18 slots). So they may not be in a big hurry to get them to market.

According to Crucial and Kingston, the 8-core configurations use Unbuffered ECC.
It would seem the 32GB option is the exception.

However, the technology is actually capable of running either Unbuffered or Registered ECC. Intel was nice enough to build it this way. ;) :p

Registered is expensive though, and the largest Unbuffered DIMM's ATM, is 2GB. Larger will be available, and I'm thinking the 4GB sticks will show up in April to coincide with Intel's formal announcement of the Xeon 5500/3500 series on March 29, with larger capacities to follow.
