I'm in exactly the same boat: finally saved enough spare cash for a Mac Pro, on the verge of buying one, then hear the rumour about a possible upgrade.
I think you need to bear a few things in mind:
Firstly, an upgrade is inevitable, it's just a matter of when. No-one knows for certain, everything you hear is just speculation. Someone on another forum insists he has a reliable source and is saying Nov 29th for the release. It might be worth waiting at least until the beginning of Dec to find out.
Of course, the waiting game might go on for ages: other people are suggesting macWorld in January, but then some others are suggesting March, June, all are just pulling dates out of the air, mostly guesswork. Sometimes it may be educated guesswork, but it's still guesswork. Nobody wants to wait indefinitely, but if you're told Nov, you wait until the end of Nov, nothing happens, you're then told Dec or Jan, so you wait again, if nothing happens again, you can bet your life people will be saying Feb, then March, and you'll just keep hanging on: you have to draw a line somewhere.
Secondly, is it absolutely vital that you need to get the best machine on the planet? If a new upgrade really is imminent, then the current Mac Pros will be discounted as sellers try and clear their old stock. They're still excellent machines by anyone's standards. For instance, Computer Warehouse here in UK are offering a good deal at the moment, a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than the Apple store, plus a free installed 500GB 2nd hard drive. I'm seriously tempted by this, but I'll wait until the end of Nov just in case.

Have to agree

Have to agree with you here - the Computer Warehouse prices are pretty good and I am seriously fed up with waiting.

I'm so tempted to just buy an 8 core with a 1950 video card and be done with it.

The main reason I've been waiting is because of the video card but I would assume that if/when a new one comes out it will still be compatible with the 'older' mac pro.

Still, I'll probably hang in a bit longer anyway....

This is driving me nuts I have organized the sale now the guy is coming to collect within the next 2 weeks max, so if he come and collects then I have to choose. Buy a mac pro or maybe get a imac 20" to tie me over?

I can get one the same power as my current 24", with the 2.4ghz cpu etc so i would be happy with that and actually make some money it's either that or spend another £700+ pounds and get me a 2.66 mac pro quad :confused:

Sell the old, get the new, but keep it in perfect condition–keep all of the original documentation and packaging, try to leave as many original stickers on there as possible (there aren't many on macs though). Be prepared, when the time comes, to do a clean format + install of the OS. This way you should be able to retain as much value as possible. Also, your next buyer will be able to get AppleCare…

they're flashing around the ex vat price. inclusive of vat it's about £9 cheaper than direct from apple and only comes with tigger not leopard. the extra drive space is still a sweetener on the deal, but it's not as good as it looks at first glance :(

Not strictly true. I compared the specs I wanted from Apple with the CW prices, and with the kit I wanted the CW price comes out at £3982.04, compared to £4215.00 at the Apple Store. Both prices include VAT. That's a saving of £232.96, plus a free 500GB internal hard drive and a free extra 1GB of RAM (5GB of RAM compared to Apple's 4GB). Still looks a good deal to me. Saves me enough to get a new printer too.

I was after the 3.0GHz 8 core though. Maybe the prices for the lower spec Mac Pro's are different, I didn't check them.

Given that the 8 core was only introduced in April, does anyone think this machine will be left out of any update, and that the update, whenever it happens, will only be for the older Mac Pro's? Because if this is the case, then I needn't wait. Or do you think the update will be across the whole range of Mac Pro's?

i just bought a macbook pro 2.33ghz 2gigs ram and 160 hd for $2099.

I am now ready to wait till whenever for the new mac pro's, 2 days ago i was extremely frustrated !!!!

Dilemma solved

Ok so he coming to collect/buy in the 10th dec, whats the chances of something happening by then?:eek:

"It's not like they're made out of Bakelite."

Hey, a Mac pro with a 1930's bakelite case would be great!
It would probably weigh 300 pounds though.
