As annoying as this issue is, it's been awhile since I've been stumped by a Mac issue that I couldn't solve and I'm kinda enjoying it...

I know exactly what you mean! :D Then I went to a PM extreme. A PM (preventive maintenance) 2x a year extreme.
1. Pulling the PS and using canned air
2. Pulling both memory risers and cleaning the slots
3. Pulling all PCIe cards and cleaning the slots
4. Cleaning the fan blades on the Quadro 4000 with a Qtip
5. Cleaning the internal fan blades with a Qtip
6. Using that blue fan to decrease the overall temp

The environment the MP is in is carpeted so there is that factor but no widows are ever open.

Update.

Changed the retaining clips on the northbridge, cleaned the heck out of the heat sinks, reapplied paste. Started it up and..... it shuts off again. Damn. Tried taking out all the RAM except one. Turned it on. And I get this image on my monitor which I have never ever seen before. Huh????

I have a snow leopard install disc in the drive.

Leaving the Mac in this state, want to leave it running for awhile and see if it shuts off.

Anyone have any idea what that image is?

After about a smoke, the monitor went to sleep. Turned the monitor off and back on and all I get is a blank screen. Pressed the letter 'C' on the keyboard and the Mac shut down. Can't boot up again now.

Strange but interesting!!!

Look at the bottom of a Magic Mouse and you'll get your answer to what the image shows :)

That seems like a Snow Leopard install screen considering the background, where it asks you if you turned on the Magic Mouse so it can be detected.

What happens when you remove the install DVD? There is a HDD/SSD with an install of OSX?

Try another stick of RAM or reseat the current one.

The HD that had the OS on it was wiped. I checked it before embarking on this repair and it was unreadable, I had to reinitialise it on my laptop.

Yup, trying other sticks of RAM now.
