My 2.8 Octo/nVidia 8800 did the same thing for the first time last night as I was shutting down. I had to hold the power button down to turn them off.
The only card I have installed is a MOTU PCI-424e.
The rig is running perfectly and has been for a month. I did install a few new plugins, but I don't think that is related.

I restarted and everything was good. I looped a big session for a few hours
and came back and it shut down normally. After reading the other posts, this doesn't appear to be a third party issue to me, but an Apple thing.

Hey Everyone,

Seems like the crazy fan thing just happened to me last night for the first time also. Pressing the power button for about 5-10 seconds did the trick.

My Specs:

Early 08 MP
8800 GT recently installed (about 1 week ago)
3 internal HDs
6 gb Ram

I await everyones expertise here for a solution.

I am, too, experiencing this issue with my early 2008 mac pro here in London. It has a 2 PCI cards installed: a MOTU 424e (soundcard) and a Sonnet 4 port SATA card.

I was wondering about pulling the cards, but thats a total showstopper for work.

The problem SEEMS to happen if I am running the MP for an extended period, like more than 24 hours or thereabouts. I too have walked out of the room to discover HOURS later that it's on full fan mode.

I will search out the little green button mentioned by one of the earlier posters and see what give. I suspect a firmware update will quietly emerge from apple, as that would be their style.

Also - I have another early 2008 MP, this one a 2.8. The problematic one previously mentioned is a 3.0. Now the 2.8 has never as yet exhibited this problem. It, too, sports a MOTU 424 card, but not the SATA one.

Both rigs have 10GB ram, and all the internal drive bays occupied.

Anyone else who gets this- please post.

Thanks

Mac Pro 8 core 2.8 (early 08) Same problem here,
It happened twice for so far, fun going wild after shutting down.

The very first time I runned out of my studio in panic thinkin' my mac was gonna explode!!!
So I unplugged the chord from the wall.

2nd. time I turned off by holding start for a few secounds.

As far I can guess, this started after I installed a PCIe card.
Unfortunately haven't tested more with it yet.
I'll keep you updated.

Bests, Al.

this just happened with mine again for the first time since before .3 and the last firmware update...

c'mon apple, this is ri-god-damn-diculas.

Well people....

In my case was the PCIe that failed and made fans go wild when shutting down. 'cos some kind of excesive heat...

So if any of you has a pci installed might be a good idea checking that out, if not... Good luck to everybody.
:apple:

This happens to mine occasionally.
Another problem is that on start up occasionaly the usb devices such as the keyboard take a very long while to load and become useable.
There was also the thing were the computer would start up at 1am

All of this does not occur when I unplug the elgato eyetv stick. So it may be one of your usb devices.

Also I noticed that even when the computer is off some usb devices draw power.

this also happened to me after installing the ssl pcie so far im unable to resolve this issue a real pain in the a$$$
