I thought I might find this but search did not get any hits-

I am trying to install a second hard drive in my mac pro 2x2.66 dual core intel xeon.

    I bought a seagate drive from newegg (22-148-840 HDD 1T|ST ST1000DM003 7K 64M %) and I have a standard sled from another mac.

The problem is when I screw the drive onto the sled using the obvious holes in the drive- it's out of position and will not quite fit in the slot. It seats fine but hangs out an inch or so. Checking the fit of the drive on the sled it's clearly wrong.

How do I specify a drive that will fit the sled? I don't see it as very likely that I can mod this one.

    Thanks, Joe

A pict here would be helpful. Ive never seen a 3.5" HDD that didn't fit the Apple sled. It's a standard. The drive you mentioned is:

    It should fit just fine.

A note of caution however. The Apple Sleds are not the same throughout the Mac Pro model line. The 2006 - 2008 (1,1 thru 3,1) use a different (shorter sled) than the later models. You mention that you have a sled from a different Mac Pro.

Sleds are not always interchangeable. Use a sled from the same year to be sure.

Hi Capnjoe. Sorry to hear about your HD installation problem. The drive tray sled of Mac Pros from 2006-2008 are different from the trays of Mac Pros from 2009-2012 which is longer in length. Flowrider is correct. Try to exchange the sled trays from the source and specify to them the model of your Mac Pro.

    drive and sled update

Thanks so much- I'm sure you all are spot on. One last bit of data and I will upload a pic if needed. The sled itself fits just fine without the drive and the drive is not apparently too big. The problem is how the holes in the sled line up with the drive. So the drive sticks out too far from the bottom of the sled. Does that make more sense? I know I need to replace either the drive or the sled and want to make sure that it's the sled.

Finally do any of you have a source for the sled? The current one I have was from ebay.

    Cheers, Joe
