    Hi all,
I wonder if someone could help please.
My Mac pro keeps shutting down unexpectedly - 3/4 times a day with no warning. Could it be heat related? Here's a recent screenshot of the temperatures (no idea how to read them - what is 'normal'?) plus the latest crash report copied below:

    Any help is hugely appreciated!!!

    Kind Regards
    Ged

The nVidia video card is referenced several times in that crash. Is this a recent addition to the system? Is the fan on that card working properly?

Was your system under a heavy CPU load when you captured that iStat screen shot?

Your CPU A diode was in the mid-60's. that's not excessive if your running something, but it would be alarming if the system were idling. My Mac Pro idles in the low 40's.

Your BOOST fans are at 2500 rpms each. Again, that is fine if you are doing some heavy lifting CPU-wise, but that would not be normal if you were idling.

Many thanks for your swift reply.

    Studio K:
The system was not under heavy load. I had Mac mail, PowerPoint, Safari Photoshop and Firefox but wasn't really doing any work - certainly no large open files or video work.

    monkeybagel:
Here's a screenshot of the temp now (light lead - safari. mac mail. power point, evernote open).

I have cleaned out the dust from the cards, fans etc.

I tried to edit the 'fan rules' in istat menus - but the documentation is terrible so not sure what was best. screenshot enclosed.

    Any thoughts hugely appreciated?

A Tdiode temperature in the upper 50's or mid 60's seems high for light duty stuff. That places your core temps at around 75. And your BOOST fans were running at 2250 rpms to maintain that temperature. I believe that those fans would normally run at 1100 or so under 'light' conditions.

Try just opening 1 or 2 programs (Mail and Safari) and see what the fans and temps do. Then do something very processor-intensive that works the cores hard. See what the BOOST fans and Tdiode does in iStat.

There is also the SMC reset. Unplug the machine. Hold down the power button for 15 seconds more or less. Plug it back in. Wait 10 seconds. Then turn back on. That might knock things back in order fan-wise.

I don't use iSTAt for fan control. I found it hard to manage (it sets the minimums too low and then you can't get them back to where Apple puts them). SMC FAN CONTROL is better in that it is easier to get things back to the defaults if you want to.

Nvidia drivers crashed according to KP log.
Is there any particular reason that you've still on 10.8.3?

Nvidia drivers in this version tend to crash sometimes, especially while Flash and Chrome were in use.

Update to 10.8.4 and try Nvidia web driver as well. This should solve your issue IMO. You may reset PRAM after update to clear Nvram content. After that set your boot disk again in System Preferences/Startup disk.

    Sounds right.

It's not heat tho! You don't typically get system stops from heat till around 80c on some components, 100 or 120C on others. And i think all your highest temperatures are on components where stops happen at the 100c mark. You're still a little high tho so do get and install smcFanControl while you're going about finding out why and how to fix the crashes.

Have you cleaned the inside of your computer recently? If not, it may be worth seeing how much dust has built up in and around the CPU heatsinks and intake and exhaust fan blades.

A thorough cleaning/dusting may lower your temperatures and fanspeeds.

Many thanks for all the comments. I'll look at these tomorrow.
Yes StudioK I did a thorough clean of all dust etc inside Mac Pro. Thanks for asking.

Realizing this is an old thread but I would like to know if the heating is resolved and what it took to resolve it.

    Thanks,
