Same here, I started with the 1GB from the factory, but added 2 x 1GB sticks of Crucial before I ever fired her up. Added another 2GB about 6 months latter. Can't remember if the second set was Crucial or OWC. After 2 days 22 hours of up time I have 161000 page ins and 4367 page outs. I generally keep Parallels open most of the time and find that the jump from 3GB to 5GB helped keep things sane. Really improved performance with LR

You should have fired it up first (actually, I do that with everything to make sure it's not a dud before I get started). That way I know if it was already messed-up or if I did it

But, the real reason you should have tried it first, was to see the difference. Mine came with 1 GB. I was impressed already with it as it was. I used it for a couple hours before upgrading the memory and sticking in my second hard drive (2 GB more, and an additional 500 GB drive). Then, I noticed a bit of a boost right away after starting it up with the added memory. It was nice to see.

Now, I'm happy with 3 GB for now (seems pretty decent). But, just so I can taste the good life, anyone have some extra memory they would like to send my way?

How about the guy who's upgrading all his systems. Surely there's now some spares ;)

I'll take any memory anyone would like to send. And, I'll even say something nice about you in the public forums :D

Hi all. This thread along with just upgrading my Macbook Pro has me really itching to add RAM to my Mac Pro.

I just went from 2GB to 4GB in my Macbook Pro and have noticed a world of difference. My Macbook Pro now seems to be faster than my Mac Pro with 2GB of RAM!!!

Right now I have 4 512K sticks and I'm thinking about adding 2 2GB chips to bring me to 6GB.

Anyone see anything wrong with doing this or any suggestions for setting it up differently?

Thanks.

I'd say go with 4 1gbs... but the cost isn't all that bad for an upgrade to 2gb sticks is it?

Just make sure you install the memory as per multimedia's chart.

The price is very similar, and I was hesitant to fill up all of my available memory slots just incase I want to increase the total to more than 6GB in the futrue.

Will adding the 4 1GB chips offer better performance than adding the 2 2GB chips?

I have the same RAM configuration as you in my 2.66 Mac Pro. I ordered 4 matched Quad of 1GB RAM, it will arrive tomorrow.

I think the 6GB's will be enough for awhile. When I see the need to upgrade in the future, I will purchase 4 matched Quad of 2GB RAM and sell off the 4x512mb sticks.

OWC (http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/) will take your 512MBs as trade-ins towards new RAM, so you can still upgrade without having to worry if you filled up all your slots.

But is there a performance benefit for going with the 4 1GB chips instead of the 2 2GB chips?

Hmm.... that I'm not sure. I thought getting fewer bigger chips gave better performance than spreading across a lot of smaller chips... but, I could be wrong.
