Hi. I'm new on this forum and was wondering if someone might be able to confirm the cause of kernel panics on my 1,1 10.6.8 Mac Pro after I recently upgraded this box to 8cores with 2 x x5365 cpu's. I have also upgraded the firmware to 2,1. It only occurs every few days and is not obviously reproducible which makes it hard to troubleshoot. Steps I have taken(I removed some of these kext's/apps from earlier versions of the panic logs):

    -reset pram, smc
    -Removed all unused apps
-Found Fluke ran in Rosetta - removed it
-Removed dropbox as this has been known to cause issues in 10.6.8
-booted off SLion dvd and verified SONICLIGHT(system) disk - it found errors which could be repaired
-Booted in safe mode and repaired permissions with disk utility
-Used macpilot in safe mode to run maintenance - clear caches etc.
-Pace kext updated to 5.9(latest available)
-unloaded com.motu.driver.USBMidiKext as root user(and unplugged the usb midi box)
    -un-installed com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower
-removed wd drive manager - causing attempt to pop an unknown release tool in console

Here's the most recent panic log(from a curtain of death) yesterday:

Any help would be appreciated - Foolishly, I upgraded to 10.6.8 a couple of weeks before the cpu upgrade but those 2 weeks, I didn't have any issues with kpanics when the box was still a quad core. I am starting to think intermittent problems with the newly installed x5365's?(I have already arranged for replacement with the company I bought the from just in case).

Try upgrading to the 2.1 firmware at

It is supposed to address your issue.

Thx for the suggestion, but yes, I have already upgraded the firmware to 2.1

I had the same issue when i upgraded to the quad 2.66s.

Download SMCfan control and ramp your fans up a few hundred and set that as default. Should stop the kernel panics. If not then try re applying the thermal paste, you may have put too much or too little.

I know it's rudimentary, but just to be sure:

    - Are the CPU's matched?
    - What stepping do they use?
    - What thermal paste did you use (metallic paste can cause issues if not applied correctly)?
    - Do you have a 'clean install' of 10.6.8 to compare against? (If not, can you make one?)
