Hello everyone, first post by old 72 y.o. Australian mac user.
I want to be able to use the Monitor of the 17" MacBook Pro (Nov 2007) but system of the Mac Pro. I am told this can be done with the more recent Laptops (Notebooks) By starting up the laptop first then plugging in Mac Pro via Thunderbolt connection on the newer laptops. Then using certain (?) command keys to use the Mac Pro System and not that of the laptop (lower speed).
Could this be done on the 17" MacBook Pro that does not have Thunderbolt connections. but has a FireWire 800 connection
I am not talking about having the Mac Pro as a 'external hard disk' on the laptop. but using the whole system of the Mac Pro but using only the monitor of the 17" MacBook Pro.
Because I am still traveling I do not want to buy a Mac Pro compatible separate monitor, at this time. Thanks in advance.

Why not use a small display?

I am not much younger than you are. They say one is as young as one feels...
I do not understand why you do not consider to buy for little money a small display. You can find a second hand Apple 20" display at a bargain price and use it with your MacPro. Why look for a complicated solution when a simple one is available and quite cheap...

Only iMacs have target display mode, MacBook Pros do not.

No way to make this happen.
