I'm determined to make the best of this Mac Pro that I can (within limits). For example, ram. I just got in an 8gb set from an amazon vendor. After inserting the two sticks onto the ram boards it only shows 4gb, the size of 1 stick. I used the apple manual to add memory. One stick to each ram board and in the same position, furthest in socket.

Next, the system info reports the model as 1,1. It's a 3,1 but it won't upgrade past snow leopard. How can I get it to El Capitan or maybe High Sierra ?

Is Amazon's drive tray converter to 2.5" the best ? I already have a 250gb SSD that I've love to put in. I'd like to use other drives I have as well, but even with the snow leopard formatted drive out, it won't boot into high sierra.

If answers to these questions are available elsewhere, please let me know!

Here's what Everyman says based off the serial number. Now you see the validity of my confusion.

First thing to do:
Install the latest supported OS: OSX Lion.

Next thing to do:
- Flash the firmware to turn it to MP2,1
- Flash the SMC chip to control the fans
- Upgrade the CPU (maxed CPUs = Xeon X5365; best priced CPU = Xeon X5355)
- Upgrade RAM: maxed 8 x 4GB FCB DIMM

Then install El Capitan.
Then upgrade Video Card.

Then install Windows 10 64 bit....

This is where I admit my ignorance but willingness to learn. The only one in your list I know is the last and that's done. I'm having a problem in getting it to boot any installer.

What took you so long?

I'm slowly slogging through it and a question came up. I've restored the El Cap DMG to an SSD I have in the MP. Looks Good. Given that the goal now is to have the best backup/file server I can, seems like we've gotten there. To get faster throughput on the dives and networking protocols servicing them would take a significant investment. Which I'm unwilling to make.

Instead I'd like to find a 4,1 - 7,1 and stay as close to stock as I can. Why ? ages ago there was an OS called CP/M that was decent and a way to have various non-standard machines in a decent functioning routine. Then 16 bit came along with Windows and no one had a need to toil over drivers. I respect those who learn the guts of hardware and software. But I've been there and done that .

I need a box to run a decent database with file and record locking as well as safety to allow offsite users to update their findings. So I'm looking for where to buy another Mac Pro, which database to use and someone who knows the capabilities of the apache server built in. For instance, to what extent are time machine and file services truly multi user and can they lock records and fields ?
