You can throw 128GB of RAM and 1000 cores at Photoshop and it will only be able to use a fraction of that. You can throw 128GB of RAM and 1000 cores at Aperture or Lightroom and it won't use all of it. The software itself isn't designed to use those resources to the max.
Drobo is a great backup solution for users with a lot of data. You can hot-swap in hard drives for up to 16GB worth of storage space. It connect to your computer via USB, FW800, or scsi ethernet cable. There is a 4 bay version as well, if the 8 bay version is too much.
