Sometimes when I put my Mac Pro to sleep it takes around 15 seconds and it will enter sleep mode, other times it can take many minutes to go into Sleep mode, why is that?, no specific condition, most of the time the same apps are running, is there something I can do to make this process consistently faster?

    My configuration is:

Mac Pro 2009 upgraded to 5.1 with 2x2.66Ghz 6-Core Xeon, 48GB RAM 1333Mhz, OS in Samsung SSD on an Apricorn PCI-E card, 4TB HD SATA, EVGA GTX-780 Ti 3GB, all running with Mac OS X 10.9.2

    Thanks

True for all Macs. It's probably cleaning up network connections or some such, but who knows? Maybe OS X is holding a seance for Steve Jobs.

If you have TimeMachine running, look at the little indicator right on top before you put your Mac to sleep. A starting or running backup session will delay the sleep mode for some seconds...
