Hi, I am upgrading from a late, top of the line 2012 IMAC. This is probably the last year where I will qualify for the educational discount. I was thinking of the following machine:

4.0 quad core I7
8 gig of ram (to be upgraded)
1 TB flash storage
395X graphics card.

Apart from everyday regular stuff, the computer is used for photography with large raw files (Nikon D810) so I am a heavy user of lightroom, plugins such as Nik, and photoshop. Is there any point for me to consider the Mac-pro? From my reading it doesn't seem like the extra cores or better graphic cards would be of much benefit but I would like to be sure before ordering this expensive computer. My plan is to edit the working photos in LR on the internal flash storage and then remove them to my external Pegasus Drive.

Do you think that these specs are appropriate for my uses?
Thank you very much

I just ordered the exact same except only 512GB vs 1TB. I mainly use LR with a little PS.... I think you will be very happy with the new 5K iMac and your config.

thanks, please let us know how your new machine works for you. I'm holding off ordering at the moment as I am also trying to figure out what ram to order.

I have the 2014 5k and frankly I couldn't live without the retina display now. Given the price of the MP, and a comparable monitor (as well as the headaches involved in that), you don't gain much, unless you're planning on doing a lot of video as well. Those are pretty ideal specs; you'll love it.

Order as little RAM as possible, form Apple. Much cheaper to add RAM from Crucial or elsewhere...

I agree. I have been following the posts on RAM carefully and I'm waiting for people to let us know how various types of ram works with the new machine. Thanks for your comment.
