If you're a smoker, don't buy an Imac or a pro. Apple (applecare) will refuse to service your system even if you're still under warranty.

Just happened to me, a cigar smoker, and I'll never buy a sealed mac again.

Sure, I could quit smoking altogether, I know. But I think I'd rather make those decisions, not Apple.

If your heart's set on a mac, and you smoke; if you can do routine pc type maintenance (open case, can of compressed air, swap cards, etc) then I think I'd recommend the pro.

Wwwwhaaaat? I'm guessing they must've determined the damage was caused by the smoke, not that they refused to work on it because it stinks?

Smoking has been long known to cause damage to sensitive gear (one of the reasons I never buy used electronics).

It seem's they've made it policy that if the system was in a smokey environment, the warranty is rendered invalid (no diagnostics undertaken).

It's not usually hard to smell by a non-smoker (save a cold or allergies hampering the tech's sense of smell). :D :p

Apple Techs at the Genius bar said that Apple can refuse service on smoker's computers due to environmental hazards. Supposedly, OSHA promulgated some regs that back them up.

I consider that B.S. based on over a decade in the industry, however, an update on my situation is warranted. Apple support is working with me on a resolution to my situation, though not directly tied to the smoking issue.

I called them to point out a repeated issue with the graphics adapter... and they (pretty darned quickly) are offering a resolution to the problem that is not only reasonable, but efficiently applied, and well communicated, even out of Applecare. Not an open season for all issues, mind you, mine's pretty specific. But...

If they follow through, and I have no reason to suspect otherwise... then I'll have to retract my vitriol on the issue, and eat about 2.5 metric tonnes of crow. Got any salt?
