Ok. So my Mac Pro (2008, 2.8ghz quad core) won't restart or shut down. It powers up just fine and has no other issues. If I want to restart it, then my only option is to hold down the power button.

Here's a console log any ideas where the problem is?

    Code:

I've tried a lot of the standard stuff like resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, using applejack and onyx etc.

I notice a few "ReportCrash56" errors in the console log. Any ideas what that is talking about? I can't decode the message after it.

Well, as it seems like it is just a software problem, I would recommend reinstalling OS X.

Yah, but if it's just a software issue there's nothing to say that if I reinstall OSX I won't have the same problem with the large range of applications that I use. I'd rather narrow it down now then reinstall and run into the same problem and have no idea which application is causing it.

And on that note, I've tried killall commands from terminal and it still hangs and refuses to restart/shutdown after the killall.

    Same here

I've the same machine and am suffering the very same problem. When asked to shut down or restart the dock goes and all I get is a background screen with the timer animation wheel thing going on for ever. I don't want to re-install everything It will disrupt and damage my business. How do you get the console log?

    Found it!

It has something to do with Time machine on my machine. My separate time machine drive in bay 3 has been full for a long time. When the Pro was not shutting down quickly I noticed a lot of disk activity. So on a hunch, I switch of time machine. The Pro restarted as per normal and shuts down as per normal. So I ran a disk check on the drive, no problems reported. Turned time machine on again and I get the long time to shut down, which seems to get longer the longer Time Machine operates. Now what is the fix?

Update: I ran disk warrior on the drive and it found lots of stuff out of place on its graph feature and errors in the directory listing/structure thingy on the time machine drive. So it rebuilt the disk and everything works OK now. Shuts down and re-starts quickly. I think that putting the HD's to sleep does not work well with time machine?

    Hope this helps

I have run into similar problems on my MacBook Pro.

Many bits of programmes are not working, such as the ability to press the appropriate keys and do a screengrab or to go into a hot corner and clear the screen. So I realised something was wrong and used DiskWarrior to replace the directory. I also ran permissions and hardware checks on it and ended up repairing a large number of permissions.

I then restarted and found things still not working properly so I ran Disk Utility. This again repaired a vast number of permissions, typically replacing lrw-r--r-- with rw-r--r-- (what IS lrw?). These were declared fixed, unlike the other kind of problem where I was told: "Warning: SUID file "System/Library……… has been modified and will not be repaired.".

The permissions repair didn't work so I tried it twice more, eventually realising that the list of corrected permissions was identical to the last each time. So either it can't distinguish a permission that needs repairing from one that doesn't: - or the repair is being reset somewhere as soon as I come out of the application.

Finally, I am unable to restart even now, because one app or other refuses to quit and cancels logout. It seems completely arbitrary which one will have a problem and sometimes I have already quit that programme. This means I can't even take software updates because my computer claims that Software Update wouldn't quit and has cancelled the restart.

I'm hoping somewhere out there will be someone who sees these posts and gives us all some answers. It would be hard to have to start again with a new system as I only did that a few weeks ago and it takes ages to get everything back to normal after such a drastic step.

    It failed

After a while the problem has re-emerged. I've created a copy of the drive using superduper so Disk Warrior could fix the boot drive. It found problems, fixed them, but it had no effect on the problem. I'm going to start stripping hardware out, to see if the USB drive card or some other peripheral is causing the problem?

MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo 10.4.11 with same problem

I'm also having this problem! I'll try to shut down or restart, then the dock and menu bar disappears leaving the computer stuck on my wallpaper image without shutting down. It's been happening for less than a week or so. I have also tried resetting the SMC and using Onyx, but am still having the problem.

Another thing that's happened a few times is that I've come back to my computer to find the screen has gone black but the computer is not sleeping. I haven't been sitting in front of it when it has happened so I'm not sure what may have caused it. I've had to hard restart when this happened as well. This also started happening around the same time as the above problem. I don't have Time Machine so I know it's not that on mine as suggested above.

    Hard Drives

I have a hard drive in the Pro that has a bootcamped Vista Ultimate installation on it. If I remove this drive, the problem seems to go away. My drives are mostly WD raptors. I've had the same as you too, black screen, but no shutdown. I'm at my wits end as to what it is.

    Peripherals

Peripheral connected to my MacBook when this happens would be a Bus-Powered 350 GB Glyph PortaGig connected via USB 2.0, but the issue also occurs without the external drive attached. I'm thinking it's not a peripheral.

My 2008 2.8 gets real sluggish when the temps rise. Whats your temps when this starts to happen? What apps have you been running before you try to shut down? If you have another account, log into that and see if the problem persists. I have an account with nothing but the original installed stuff. When experience problems, I log into this to see if the problem is still there. If it is, probably a hardware problem. If not, probably a software problem.

I believe its a software problem. The account thingy is the first thing I tried, but trying to find what software, well? How to do?

    Anything new?

I would think it could be anything newly added or updated? I have newly been using Jaikoz audio tagger, SimplifyMedia, LogMeIn (which I have since uninstalled as I thought it was slowing down my machine), and I remember there being a Microsoft Office Update also around the time it all started happening. If I think of anything else I'll come back and let you know. Have you recently installed any of these programs?

    I think I fixed it

I read another thread about someone having a similar problem, and someone suggested resetting the SMC, which I did, following what was said here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806

So far so good. I did have the Pro scheduled to shutdown as midnight and start up at 0800, so I guess this may have been a factor.

Spoke too soon. as soon as I added the Time machine drive and the Vista Drive. It wouldn't shut down again. Going to pull my hair out then reset the Pram, and reformat the T/M drive.
