Mac random crashes, from shortly after start up to after several hours usage

Using a standard Macbook 2.1 core 2 duo 10.6.7, no modifications

Any restart attempts fail immediately or occasionally get as far as the desktop home page, long enough once to see the fan was running and the cpu temp of 59degs C

I have upped the fan speed to 2400 so I now it’s running when it crashes, the temperatures are usually around 40degs but it runs at much higher temperatures without a problem, the fan speeds up to cope

If I leave the computer alone for 30 minutes after a crash it always starts up OK but any shorter time it won't

The restart is clean with no programs running

Happens at all states of Battery charge, with or without the charge lead
Battery holds 3-4 hours of charge and behaves normally

Help, it’s so intermittent I am reluctant to take it in for repair

Copy of Console log after crash_

Is it kernel panicking? If so, we need to see panic logs.

Mines started doing the same thing, although more specifically after I upgraded the ram. It's a MacBook 4.1 2.4Ghz 4GB 667 DDR2. running 10.6.8

It was running very hot with the fan almost constantly on and the beachball was becoming annoying, after the ram upgrade random screen freezes would happen at least once a day, Id originally concluded it was ore to do with over heating. If watching a video the soundtrack could still be heard yet the screen was still frozen, even the clock seconds would freeze although the beachball would still spin if it was present when the screen froze.

I had though been running iAvd which is a really git for the processor i'm still yet to be convinced of the value of iavd, perhaps someone will be able to comment. Quitting iavd seems to prolong the time interval between freezes but it hasn't eliminated them altogether, the after forced reboot report mentions GPu. The case gets very hot and gpu over heating kind of fits in with the screen freezing yet the sound still audible?????

    Mac random crashes

Thanks, I don’t think it is a Kernel Panic as I understand it, the System/logs and diagnostic report files in Console are empty and I don’t get any shutdown messages.
Seems not to get time to store anything that is current, when it eventually restarts all programs that were running are closed Could it be a power supply problem?
The fault started after the mac was switched off for 4 weeks, the main repeatable factor is that it tries to restart but always succeeds if I wait around half an hour.
It’s as though some thing is self-repairing, e.g. possibly a battery cell or an electrolytic capacitor? (I have known other electrical equipment to fail after a long lay off)
It does seem to fail to start up from cold occasionally after it has been charged – not consistent though
The longer I leave it switched off the longer it will run before a crash – very strange!
Functionally it’s perfect but it’s not doing anything in particular.
It runs at about 40 degs F and the fan speeds up to 4000 rpm to keep the temperature below 80degs when it’s under load. It does not seem to fail when
    it’s hot!
If there is a log file I am missing please let me know

I don't think the thread above is too similar to this issue

Look in the logs for "Previous shutdown cause". It'll have a number. That number is pretty useless without a reference, but I have a reference. Specifically, I need any of them that show up on the first power up after it shut down on you.

I get 5 which I guess is a normal shutdown and 128 which I think is me forcing a shutdown by holding the power key down when the mac repeatedly attempts to restart

I also get logs of- "Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self"
"Jul 1 17:54:34 localhost DirectoryService[15]: Improper shutdown detected'

I took it to a mac repairer, they said I needed a new motherboard and hard drive, I declined and since it was returned it has not failed! Something mechanical then
I do get disc errors which so far the system recovers from
