Mac running slow.

My macs been running slow all over, every app i use, any gestures i make. The whole system is having lag spikes, I have a feeling this might be an OS problem maybe? I'm running OSX mavericks on a early 2013 13" MBP non-Retina 2.9 GHz i7, 8GB ram and 750 GB HDD with 400 GB free space.
