What is the best place to get and discover Mac software? The Mac App Store was supposed to be that, but not all developers put their apps in the store. So, is there a better place to look for Mac software? MacUpdate? Somewhere else?

I've used Setapp in the past. Long story short if you're really (I mean really) need specific apps that you can get only under a subscription payment, and their compound cost is more than the Setapp subscription cost, then it may worth getting it.
I personally found the annual subscription on Setapp was more than it would cost me to buy the licences for the 2-3 apps that I was regularly using.

I thought that. I keep wondering if there is some software out there I am missing because they are not in the Mac App Store. Even if I don't buy from the Mac App Store, it is a good place to research... I just need another place to find software. It's hard to know what software is out there... in my day, I went to the software store or Best Buy. Now that everything is digital, need a new place to go.

What is/are your area/s of interest?

I've been using BBEdit for years purchased from barebones dot com, and only recently came to realize that it is also available on MAS

Nevertheless, I've always SE-broad-search'ed for soft that fits my particular Use Case Scenario . . . and have quite-often been led to soft only avail on MAS 😉

MacUpdate.com is pretty much the only all-encompassing site for macOS software. There used to be others, but they've all since gone out of business.

That's not to say there aren't other places. GitHub, for instance, has lots of great software directly from the developers - but it requires searching (you pretty much need to know what you're looking for in order to find anything).
