Mac stopped making sounds

For some reason my Mac wont make sounds when I drag and drop pictures from webpages to my desktop and when I send items to the trash from iPhoto.

What is wrong?

Sometimes my Mail and iChat decide to have a quiet day. Not sure why, not sure how to fix it. Just happens.

hold option and turn up the volume in the menubar. youll notice itll make a different noice to when you dont hold option.
