My Mac Studio's ethernet port may be faulty. The max transfer speed has dropped down to less than 100Mbps. I have AT&T fiber with 1G service and up until yesterday I was getting internet speeds well above 900Mbps up/down.
I've plugged the same ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro and am getting the full 1G service. I have a USB-C ethernet adapter and plug it into the Mac Studio, and again full 1G.

Am I right in thinking the ethernet port has gone bad?

I'd recommend disconnecting the Ethernet cable from your Mac Studio, shutting it down, letting it sit off for 30 seconds or so, and then turning it back on. Once on, reconnect the Ethernet cable and then retest your speed.

Just tried that. No change. Not only is it slower, but it also takes a lot longer to find the ethernet connection than it did in the past.

First thing to try is a new ethernet cable (at least cat-5E).
Tried different cables. No change. But I also used the exact same cable using an USB ethernet adapter and got faster connection. So it seems the cable is not the issue.

I have the same issue. Did you get a hardware fix from Apple?

My details below:

I recently noticed the Ethernet port in the rear of my Studio M4 Max is not allowing download speeds above 100Mbps. I used to get the usual ISP provided speeds of 850-950Mbps.

I called Apple and no remedy was provided. When I use the same Cat5e cable to a Ethernet to USB-C adapter and insert into a rear Thunderbolt 5 port my normal high download speeds return.

Any suggestions? I could always take to a Genius Bar and get a warranty fix but that would be a pain.

Thanks

Check the hardware settings part of the Ethernet pane in Settings. You can force it to your desired speed. I have had trouble with Auto mode in that setting.

My M1 Mac Studio has many things connected to it. Several SSDs, two monitors, a midi keyboard, a USB audio device, hubs, ethernet etc. Yesterday we had a thunderstorm and a lightning strike somewhere nearby caused an audible "pop" in the house.

It seems the strike fried the Mac Studio's ethernet port (Diagnostics reports an Ethernet issue). It's odd that I can still see it in System Information…used to be if ethernet died it wouldn't show up.

Also shot is the USB audio device. It still powers up but macOS doesn't see it. Confirmed with multiple cables and a second Mac.

I imagine the Ethernet repair would be around $300. The only place I've seen the part for sale had it for $200. No thanks! I'll go the USB-C to Ethernet adapter route. Already had one.

Everything else seems OK. It's weird what got affected and what didn't.

I also had a huge lightning storm recently. I guess my surge supressor failed to protect the Ethernet port. Oh well, the adapter works fine. What is strange though the Ethernet port works, but only at 10% usual speed.
