.mac subscription

I recently purchased an Alu 24" iMac and have the opportunity to try .mac out for two months. I would really like to try it out, but I have a quick question. If I sign up for an @mac.com email address will I be able to keep the email address even if I don't subscribe to .mac after the trial? Or, if I do subscribe to .mac, and cancel the subscription after a year or two, will I be able to keep the @mac email address?
I would hate to transfer all my email to the @mac address if I will just lose the account if I ever decide to cancel the .mac subscription.

You must be an active subscriber to .mac for the email account to work.
You can still use the ID for iChat, even if you're not active, though.
