As an Apple user, I tend to be slightly more forgiving of mistakes on their part but this seems a little fishy, so I thought I'd ask the opinion of the message boards here.

I've had a .Mac account for years. I've been incredibly anal about making sure that when the Mail is accessed via a client (MacMail, Outlook, Thunderbird), that messages are always left on the server. Always.

They are only deleted on .Mac if they are deleted individually locally. And even then, they have to be deleted twice. They aren't permanently dumped from .Mac Mail every time it's accessed via POP or IMAP. So when the MobileMe migration fired up a month or so ago, at first I didn't have access to my Mail. And I figured "no biggie, it's a new service, bound to take a little bit migrating everything".

But then I only had mail dated 6 months or newer. And my contacts, calenders and all but one folder in my iDisk was missing. So I figured I'd give it a week or so. But it's still gone. And yea yea, I expect the usual "YOU DIDN"T BACK UP YOUR DATA?!?! ZOMG!!one!1" responses, but that's why people pay for a service like this. To get the same security in archiving your data with less inconvenience. The people who don't want to lug around a portable hard drive or stacks of blank DVD-R's.

I mean the iDisk data, ok I can let that go. But the email, addresses and calenders? The whole reason I used the service is so that if my computer fries out or I need to wipe and do a clean install that I don't have to worry about losing that info or spend hours archiving all the data from the last 6 months. And that's exactly what I had happen, a computer fried.

I'm curious to see what kind of responses other people received from Apple, who have had similar troubles with .Mac migration. Not because I'm looking for some handout from Apple, but just out of genuine curiosity.

I mean if someone pays for 12 months of archiving, and 4 of those months are lost by Apple, shouldn't they get 33% of the yearly fee refunded? I mean I don't want a free year of MobileMac or a refund of the whole .Mac subcription, but it seems fair to give that x% back for the months you didn't provide the service you're being paid for.....

I mean don't get me wrong, I like their products, they're easy to deal with, but I'm dumping my .Mac once the subscription is up and using GMail as the primary since it's free and more reliable.
