I'm sort of forced to continue with .Mac, as I'm using it to host my cheesy wedding webpage (www.punzie.com) ;)
.

Well, since you have a .com address, you could actually use any Web host for your page. Look around macrumors, there are a lot of recommendations for hosting services that are cheaper than .mac.

.Mac

When Gmail came out and I got an address I started to send Apple emails about making .Mac more competitive. I haven't heard a thing from them, the only thing I was really asking for was more capacity. Even Yahoo offers what Apple does now as far as storage and it is free.

.Mac has a lot of features but I always get the feeling that it is under development and that subscribers are investing in what is to come. I remember Apple saying that it was supposed to be free. They need to do something though to make it worth $100.

When I bought my PowerBook last month, I went ahead and just ordered the .Mac retail box since they have (had?) that discount going on. What was it, $30 less? I thought it was worth it. But instead of using my activation code right away when it arrived, I just signed up for the trial. Now a month later I'm sitting here staring at my retail box, wondering why I purchased it. I've barely used anything on the trial yet.

Well hopefully there will be an update.

Im surprised so many people paid $99 just for the email - thats crazy!

For those of you who don't use the other features, you may want to start.

Backup will help you, er... backup. How many posts have we seen on this very forum site with titles like "Hard drive died, no backup, need help!!!"

Also, how can you not use Address book and Bookmarks, does everyone only use one computer? If not, I find this priceless.

What about Virus protection, don't use that either, huh??? wow.

No .Mac is not worth $99 if you are just using email, but if you look at the whole package, it's very much worth the coinage.

PS. I also have bothered apple about the iDisk and email storage quotas - heres to hoping...

It would be interesting if the features were offered a la carte...

iTunes and iDisk

Wouldn't it be cool if when i purchased a tune on iTunes, it automatically backed it up on iDisk (since no multiple downloads possible) then would let me stream my tunes to any computer i happen to be using as long as i Authorized / deauthorized? Could sell .mac to PCers too.

Maybe, but remember you only currently get 100MB of storage space. Apple needs to implement a feature that allows you to easily sync your iTunes Music Library accross multiple computers. As far as "no multiple downloads are possible", well that is true unless something drastic happens to the songs you've purchased through the music store (such as a hard drive failure)---during those rare cases, Apple will let you redownload your purchased music if you send them an email.

Virus Protection? Why? Maybe in the future, but currently installing Virex just takes up space and memory. Backup? I don't use Apple's backup because it does not store files in a "normal" directory hierarchy, which is cumbersome if for some reason I no longer subscribe to .Mac, but I want to use a backup I made with .Mac’s backup. Although, I’m sure if you wanted to fish through the directories all of the information would be accessible. .Mac’s not for everybody, its hard having to give up an email address I’ve had for numerous years. I’m sure we all would like to see more features from .Mac.
