LOL !

why? i've noticed that mac users are emotionally attached to their used macs.

ive been trying to buy a used mac and the prices are inflated. im guessing it is due to sentimental attachment, even though they have moved on and bought new macs.

they try to sell their old macs for wayyyy too much.

lets discuss.

You have been trying to buy a used Mac.
If you are, chances are that a lot of other people are. If a lot of other people are interested in buying a used Mac, they will go for more than if few people are interested in buying a used Mac. So they sell for more.

Understand?

LOL@ resale value.

im still seeing G4 /5 being sold for 600!!

those are pretty much obsolete. come on now. lets be real about this. lets take the emotion out of it and deal with the specs only. lmao.

Macs have amazing resale value. I sold a Mac Pro back in September for $2400 that cost me $2799 a year before. The thing was stock just like the day I bought it. I also sold a four month old black MB for $1450, that was $50 less than what it cost me back then. It's amazing!

i think that's what the OP is trying to say that why macs have such high resale value. I don't think it has anything to do with being "emotionally attached". But for some reason, some mac computers are selling for crazy high prices.

So why are people paying such high prices? There could be many reasons.

1) Like some of you have mentioned, computers that were only available for a limited amount of time (such as 12" PowerBook) have high resale value because there are some insane mac lovers out there who will pay high prices just to own that computer.

2) Second and the most important reason is lack of knowledge. You will see people paying so much for rev. A macbook air on eBay, when they could have gotten rev. B for same or just a lil more. Same thing goes for iphone 3g and 3gs. 16gb iphone 3g is going for $400 on eBay, while 3gs has dropped to $500 now. When iphone 3gs came out the prices of iphone 3g went down, because alot of people upgraded to newer iphone. Then instead of staying the same or going lower even more, they actually went up. Because most people don't know the difference, other than 3gs can record video and 3g cant.
There are so many other examples, like 2 + years macbook pro going for $1000+, when you can get a brand new or refurb MBP for about the same price. Again lack of knowledge, maybe some people don't even know about refurb. macs?

3) Third reason is, Apple don't ship to all the countries in the world. Also, in some countries where it does ship, the prices are so much higher ( due to currency differences) that it will still be cheaper for the people to pay $1000 for a 2+ years old on eBay then to pay in their own currency buying the same computer locally.

I'll openly admit that I am emotionally attached to my macs. I'm on my hackintosh Dell Mini right now and after having it for a month now I have to say that I am actually attached to the aesthetic of Macs and wish they made a netbook, as I would have gladly paid an extra $100 or so for a mac netbook. The Dell is pretty and all but it just doesn't feel right.

At this point in my life I am totally fine with being emotionally attached. My macs do what I need them to and make me happy, and I don't feel much of a need to question it.

I think one reason Macs hold their resale is because the market isn't flooded with them. They don't have a huge market share, thus the fact that they are priced higher. Also, the fact that Apple makes the hardware AND software also contributes it. Apple is also popular.

I think you combine that with the fact that they are arguably better built than their windows counterparts, and they cost more to begin with, people see the value in them. You buy a MBP 15" top of the line for $2600, sell it 2 years later for $1600, the buyer would be like WOW, I saved quite a bit on a pristine and capable machine. While the seller is like "Damn, I lost 35% value in 2 years.." :)

Is there something wrong with being emotionally attached to some thing I paid good money for. I'm not in love with it. I saved up and bought it - that is important to me. I therefore don't just toss it out of the window when I've finished with it.

Its value is decided ultimately by what someone is prepared to pay for it.
