Shizz I knew a company who had 3 edit bays and they all shared footage off internal MacPro drives (not system drives) via their crappy network. It wasn't ideal but it got her through the year until she could buy her used $30K Facilis server.
But this post sounds like just one guy. If that's the case, having 3 iMacs is a waste of, well, everything. Be better having one Mac Pro and a MBP if you really need it.

Strange

Ive noticed lately that these types of question have been coming up?

And they never come back again...

Come on, let's have a "post pics of your setup" thread. Must be weeks since we've had one of those. That gives us all an excuse to clean our desks. I apologise in advance for having Logitech speakers rather than something a little better.

Not all of us are gone :)

I haven't left :). I have been reading this and other threads and am amazed at how much you do know. Maybe the increased number of posts has to do with the gap between real pro level video people using Macs and the newbies like me who are getting into video as a result of print dying.

Some of us have five Macs and find ourselves needing a Mac pro, and are indeed 'over-thinking' out of sheer terror (of squandering our small budgets).

A lot of forums can be super friendly and some can get a little mean-spirited at times and after reading the depth to which the responses have gotten 9\(in other threads) I can see where someone asking for help in a lazy sort of way can really tick off the rest of you.

Just know that searching Mac Raid Card in this forum brings up a lot of threads that are super helpful but not always covering what newbies like me may need to know.

Hopefully, the increased number of MP Raid HD video editing questions here can fine-tuned by those in need of help so as to make the lives of the knowledgeable a little better. Perhaps a new category could be made for this topic?

To the op. How many editors? If your single you wont need much for server situation. Its not like you need a SAN to handle multiple editing suites.
You can stay with your iMacs and just get a Macmini OS X Server.
Not sure if you can attach an SAS/eSATA/FC to that but if you can then pick up a big TB drive and use AFP route.
Again only if your not attacking the server with multiple editors.
