Just finished setting up VisionOS 2.2 and MacOS 15.2 (both are required for the new virtual display with ultra wide) and this is insane!

1) Even without the new wide and ultra wide options, the virtual display looks crystal clear, worlds better than it ever did before

2) With the ultra wide display option I literally have several monitors of display space in front of me to use, it's like a breath of fresh air to have so much real estate to lay out windows and multitask in.

I totally agree. I was waiting do this feature and thankfully it’s amazing. I have an LG ultrafine 4k display for regular “display” needs and now the ultra wide on the AVP will be fun to use.

Im now fully sitting at my desk, and using the AVP for the ultrawide monitor is insanely good. Apple, this is amazing.

I have to admit, the new feature is very very nice. that should have been a day 1 feature. What's best, the delay is pretty much gone. It behaves like a 60hz UHD display. which is quite nice.

I use a Mac Studio with M2 Ultra and 76C GPU with an 32" OLED 4K 240hz monitor on a daily basis for work and a bit of gaming & content cosumption - the virtual AVP display doesn't even come close to the performance or sharpness of my monitor. Do yourself a favor and don't ever try a 240hz 4K OLED, it will ruin your view on EVERY other monitor - like forever.

The previous iteration was unusable to me. Too much latency and too blurry. This changes it totally. The delay is almost non-existent and it's so much clearer. I guess that's because it now does foveated rendering on the Mac. I guess the next step would be to break windows out into the visionOS UI to use separately from the Mac display.

Now it would be nice if they could add the "Look at MacBook" to activate to the other Macs or by extension when looking at the Studio Display.

I love the dramatically increased virtual display size, but am I the only one who doesn't notice the decreased blurriness? To me it looks exactly like before: Sharp enough to be usable, not sharp enough to compete with the clarity of a Studio Display or a MacBook screen.

That’s because it didn’t get sharper

It absolutely did. They even announced this at WWDC. "Everything stays crisp and sharp everywhere you look because of dynamic foveation performed on your Mac."

They can now render the parts of the virtual display you're looking at in a higher resolution than before.

I am closely watching this feature. If I can take High Quality screens with me on the road, it’s easy buy for me. work on MBP is pain on the move when traveling.

Would you mind sharing what make and model of monitor you are using? Thanks!

I really expected not to seriously consider the OG version but if the improvements are this extreme, it begins to become of interest

Very exciting! The amount of latency it had before wasn't a complete deal breaker for me, but it was enough to be noticeable and actually a bit disorienting. I'll be really glad if it's substantially improved.

It's awesome. I now want more curved screens for native apps. We also need to be able to do native AVP gestures with the virtual display. Just keep wanting more...It's fun to be on the journey seeing this 1st version evolve and improve.

Oh man... I'm typing from the Mac Virtual Display now on 2.2, this KICKS ASS. Everything is so much sharper, the foveated rendering is performing some magic here. I'm personally more a fan of the "normal" width rather than the ultra wides, but this is such a huge huge step forward from what we had before. As others have said, this now looks and feels just like a 4K portable display, rock solid at 60Hz. I'm not sure I could spend all day in here due to the comfort of the device, but I'm now absolutely a believer that once they get the weight down a bit, this is the future of computing.

So cool :)

To me, it looks best when the window size is larger and/or close to my face in the environment. It looks extremely sharp and better than most actual monitors I’ve used.

Yeah sure, it’s the gigabyte fo32u2p. This thing is perfect for Mac since it only need a Thunderbold cable for 4K 240hz. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. This display will make all other displays look like 1980 crap

But whats the difference between just buying one of those larger monitors? I don't get the hype around this tbh.

Less eye strain with the ultra wide monitor than buying an AVP.

Three obvious differences:
  1. All physical monitors I have seen larger than the Pro Display XDR have painfully low resolution.
  2. The virtual display can easily be resized and repositioned.
  3. The monitor in your photo isn't very portable.
By the way, why would there be any difference in eye strain?

Its like if that monitor was higher resolution, could fold up/down to any size you want, could fit in a small rucksack, and can follow you round 24/7 :)

Not the original poster but I've been using a FO32U2 Pro from Gigabyte. 32" 4k QD-OLED 240Hz. It's incredible. The Apple Vision Pro could not possibly come close to that for my use case in particular. AVP is right at the mark where I can't see the individual pixels necessarily but I know they're there if that makes sense so I found coding at my typical font size was way too uncomfortable.

The only downside is the dynamic dimming the display has to do when there's a lot of bright content on the display but I got used to that after a couple days. Mini LED monitors can get brighter but I care more about the advantages of OLED over that. I won't be buying anything other than OLED displays going forward, there's no going back. The MBP needs this tech now, shame we have to wait another 2 years minimum for it. Using an OLED monitor really exposes how bad the MBP's mini LED tech is (bloom in particular).
