whenever bootcamp finishes the windows installation it restarts but doesnt restart to windows like it usually does it just restarts back to mac. I tried to restart and hold option but the windows partition did not show up. after I restarted again I checked disk utility and the windows partition was named disk0s4 instead of bootcamp. I dont know what the problem is but it would be great if i could get some help

I think it’d help a lot to know more of the particulars... Mac, MacOS, type of disks, whether you removed every other disk drive esp. USB type. Gives us a fuller picture.

Big Sur 11.1 usually has good/better Bootcamp Assistant support, but not 💯 flawless.
What version and where was Windows 10 downloaded from or acquired too.

i was using high sierra but i just upgraded to big sur, im going to try it now. I am using a 2017 13 inch macbook air, I dont really understand the whole disk thing but the only one i see on the disk utility is macintosh

Make sure you have backups. B.S. uses APFS. Good to have a new TimeMachine backup. Also to have more than 64GB dedicated to Windows.
Id boot from external drive or Recovery Mode and repair Macintosh.

Best course is to wipe your Air internal drive completely and start with fresh Mac 11.1 system install. Run Bootcamp Assistant and only later restore your data.
