My wife is going back to college, and needs a thin/light laptop to do light web browsing, email, and MS Office. I stopped at MicroCenter over the weekend, and almost bought a ChromeBook14 for ~$200 -- but they also had a closeout deal on a MacBook 12 (rose gold) for $799. Not knowing the recent prices of MacBooks - would anyone pull the trigger on this deal? She obviously was drooling all over it, but I wanted to do some research first.

It looks like the ChromeBook would only be able to use the mobile version of MS Office, and an entry level Windows laptop that isn't nearly as thin and light as a MacBook 12 is looking to be around $400-$500.

Depends on which model.

It's a good price, but I'm not a fan of the 2015 because it's slower and has a poor keyboard. And the 2016 while faster still has a poor keyboard. The 2017 is faster than both with an OK (but not great) keyboard.

Regardless of the model though, $799 new is a good price.
