Hi guys!

I was planning on upgrading my girlfriend's SSD on her MacBook Pro 13" Retina 2015, but when I opened it I noticed there could be water damage in it? It has been working just fine for the last year, there is nothing wrong with it, but when looking into it you can tell the some of the indicators have turned red. The only bit of corrosion I can see is on the second picture. It's a small spot, have a look at it.

She traveled and had her laptop on high humidity countries, so that could be my only guess since she never spilled water on it, or maybe previous owner.

Do you guys think is worth to even change the SSD on this one or it might not last long?

Thank you for your help, much appreciated!

Cheers!

No worries, no disbelieving you, just I can't see anything. Maybe give it a blow with compressed air to get dust out.

Thank you for taking your time to answer!

I thought on the second picture, the red and white was some sort of corrosion ! I’ll point it out here!

Not a good spot for water, lift the locking tab for the display cable and check the pins there. The 2 50v pins for the backlight are the most susceptible to corrosion. Also, this is the underside of the board, I'd be interested to see what the other side looks like as gravity usually dictates that it holds water better. Either way, a little bit of water is usually pretty easy to repair for a skilled and experienced technician.

Would you recommend me doing anything to it or bring it to a shop ?

Removing the board is not difficult with the right screw driver.

Clean all of the affected parts with pure isopropyl alcohol. I never took one apart until I started with a mid-2013 13" Air. After that, it was easy to disaasemble a mid-2014 13" and a 2015 15".

Just be patient, go slowly, and check out the iFixit guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Retina+Display+Early+2015+Teardown/38300

If it all works fine and does not currently have moisture on it then there's no need really. Just clean any white stuff with isopropyl and a toothbrush.
