Hi
I know no one actually knows but do you think this years update will offer much over the current model. ?

I remember someone saying the new chip it will get won’t offer much of a upgrade but if they add more ports or bigger screen then it would be a worthy upgrade

What do you think?

Personally, I would like to see a 1TB option and Apple's own in house processors. I'd settle for 8th gen intel processors though.

Hopefully besides iterative chipset upgrades it will get better keyboard. Smaller bezels within same body would be great. More ports would be great but unlikely. All of these may come to MacBook air update that is rumored this year, however, in a heavier body.

I'm thinking about saying forget it and getting a 2017 on one of these July 4th sales instead of banking on a dream of what we think the 2018 might be.

There have been sales of the 2016 512GB Macbook's for $999. Woot had it a couple of days ago. I would go that way over buying a new one. If you need the ports and bigger screen, I'd recommend the MacBook Pro 13 instead.

Thanks. My local Best Buy has a 2017 refurb (m3 256) for $950 open box. I’ll just get that.

That's sort of what I did. I thought I might get a MacBook if there was an interesting update in June. Well, no update, but later as I was looking at B&H Photo's website, I saw they had a $150 discount on a certain MacBook model, and I just went ahead and bought it. And I'm glad I did. It looks to me like the next updates to Apple's laptops will likely be for the Air or Pro lines, since chips are available now for them to update. There's really nothing available to update for the MacBook unless Apple makes major changes to the design (more ports, better screen, better keyboard), but as those changes take major R&D efforts compared to upgrading to a newer-gen CPU, I just don't see that happening. The 2017 MacBook as it stands now is really in a pretty good place compared to the Pro or Air line.

So anyway, I'd say it makes sense to look for a random discount on a 2017 model and go for it.

I am not sure why places like B&H get to offer unexpected discounts, but they are out there!

I just picked one up at Best Buy through their 4th of July sale for $150 off. Great little computer.

The real problem with that is a 1TB MacBook is fast approaching £2000 before Apple Care. Speaking as someone who LOVES and owns a MacBook for my business as well as previously owning a 2016 and 2015 model, IMO it's really not in anyway worth spending £2000 on. It's beautiful but tiny and very very very fragile - I feel that the lid and screen would snap if I put a tiny amount of weight behind it. It's worth £1000-£1300 max retail but £2000 would be insane for something like this. Even for me as a business user, there's no way I could justify that price, it's not worth the money. And that's coming from someone who loves it design wise but when it comes to money, profit margin honesty and the value of money, i've truly got my head screwed on!

I have a home server with 8tb network attached storage. I don't even use up that 256gb that MacBook came with

Also for £2,000 you could buy a MacBook Pro. I really think Spple should of dropped the price of the MacBook by now, for some reason they haven’t.

I fully expected the base 2015 to be available for $999 by now replacing Air, I'm really surprised it's not the case.
I hate it when they keep selling an old model instead of having a proper entry level like they are doing with the 2015 15" MBP but yeah, it would still be a good option at that price.

Macbook air update will likely be a cheaper version of MacBook, with lower specs and heavier but with a Retina screen. But if they put into it a good keyboard and FaceTime camera it may become very popular.

The Woot! sales are always the older 2015/16 models. I would stay away from them.

Thanks. My local Best Buy has a 2017 refurb (m3 256) for $950 open box. I’ll just get that.

Best Buy does not "refurb" computers. What they claim to be a refurb computer is actually a computer that someone has returned to their store, and BB cleans it up with a rag, blows it out with some compressed air, and reformats the hard drive and reinstalls the operating system, boxes it back up in the original box and sells it for less than MSRP. If you want a MacBook that's truly been refurbished--as in taken apart, inspected, defective parts replaced, made to look brand new with a one-year Apple warranty included, repackaged in a brand new box and shrink wrapped--the only place you're going to get that is directly from Apple at their refurbished store. Buyer beware when you buy anything from Best Buy that they claim is "refurbished."

If they put in a retina display and reduce those bezels it will be VERY popular, i think they could just drop the price of the current 12" MacBook, remove the Air and introduce a bigger 13.3" version of the MacBook which could be around the same point as the 12" is now.

Microsoft have just announced the 10" Surface Go which could compete with Apple, i really think Apple need to update their Mac's it's starting to get annoying leaving us all waiting like this, especially those of us who have waited a while (i kind of regret not getting a MacBook or MacBook Pro last year)

Not sure why you say this. I had a 12" MacBook for nearly two years before upgrading to a 2017 MacBook Pro (decided four ports was worth more to me than the small size). Subjectively they feel a similar degree of robustness to me. I heavily use both in a similar way with frequent travel in a shoulder bag. I am careful but don't feel that the screen would snap off any sooner on the MacBook than the Pro...but not going to test :) !

Would love to see new processors made by Apple and how they fare. I am sure they would make them perform better both thermally and speed-wise. MacBook is a fantastic little computer and the only reason I went for 13in MBP was that I live in a climate where I would rather have fans in a computer.

Because he's a bodybuilder. :)

It took me quite a while to get used to how smooooth the hinges are and how light the whole thing is, and once I did get used to it my subconscious decided Macbook is an average weight laptop, and somehow my rMBP 2015 (which seemed alright half an hour earlier) is some sort of elephant with keys made of chewing gum and a hinge that must be broken because there's no way a laptop should require so much force. ;)

(Yes, I like the keyboard very much. I'm scared of it, but I love the feel.)

That's about right - scared of it, but love the feel.

One Q, do you have both machines right now? Or only the Pro?
If you have both, what's the weight difference?
