Hello

can anyone give me advice on how to get rid of these smudges on my new MacBook Pro 2020? I cannot get rid of them at all. I tried to get rid of a little bit of dirt with my finger and from there it’s just got worse. It’s putting me off using it until I can clean it.

I’ve tried a cloth and water but it doesn’t work. I’ve got a micro fibre cloth on order.

ignore the blue dots over the picture I don’t know why they are there.

Use a microfibre cloth and some distilled water to wipe it off. Don't use anything abrasive or any strong ammonia based cleaners

Looks like grease from your fingers. A gentle cloth, wet, wrung out, and a tiny drop of washing-up liquid. It's the soap that'll get it off. Then dry it with a dry cloth. Be gentle but not paranoid.

thank you I’ll give it a try! Such a pain and when I’ve spent £1,400 on it I cannot stand to have awful finger marks all over it.

I clean mine regularly for the same reason. After a couple of days I see the finger marks on the screen and then wonder why I was even prodding the screen in the first place. Then I remember that it was to wipe off some other mark. Exactly the same as you., and it's worse if I've got moisturiser on my hands.

I can only see the fingerprints when the screen's off/blank but it still bothers me enough to give it a quick wipe with a bit of soap when necessary.

The finger grease comes from the keyboard, which can easily be cleaned off - just use a cleaning cloth made for glasses with a little water. I have the same thing on both my MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (both 13''). When closing the screen, it touches the keyboard, so no matter how careful you are with not touching the screen, there will still be plenty of dirt/grease on the monitor. A bit annoying, but not really avoidable, unless you use the paper sheet that came with the laptop when new.

That would leave key-shaped grease marks, surely? The photo in the op looks like fingers were wiped across the screen. Actually, reading it again, they said that this is what they did.

Cool. My fingers must be greasier than yours, as I often need a bit of soap to remove mine :)

I don’t know why I even touched it with my finger to be honest - it’s not normally something I’d do! I tried to get a little spec of dirt off and it just got out of control lol!

I ordered This from amazon and the cloth it came with just cleared it off straight away, didn’t actually use any of the spray in the end!

I'm noticing this problem as well, first with the Mac Air 2020 I briefly owned, and now the MacBook pro 13" exchanged it for. Problem area on both was the faor left side for whatever reason. My old Mac Air 2013 never had this problem, and has less smudges on it over 7 year this one has in 7 hours.

What gives? And can you really get them off? I just ordered some microfiber cloth's myself. I'm seeing some recommend just water, some say lens cleaner solutions for screens. Which is better? And if I use water, must it be distilled instead of tap?

It's not your fingers that smudge the screen, it's your keys that do it. I have only ever used a slightly damp corner of a microfibre cloth from my local supermarket, and then once the screen is damp, just dry it with the rest of the cloth. I also then use the wet part to clean the rest of the computer.

Just using regular water?

Once you get it perfectly clean, buy one of these. I have one and love it. Protects the screen from the keyboard when closed and eliminates reflections when open. They also make other sizes for MBP.

Interesting. However, I've been sitting on a new screen protector for my iPhone 8 for over a year now because I lack the confidence to think I can apply it well.
