Be great when we get a definitive answer to this. I also read somewhere, reliable if I recall, that it's important to consider how much space you have left on the SSD. So for example if you're utilising 90% of the space on a 256MB then a 512MB with 45% bring used and 55% free will be faster.

Fascinating thread; I'm looking into purchasing a 11" at some stage myself, and have been mulling over this very point.

Personally, I'd prefer a 512GB SSD but the 256 SSD would also be well worth having as it would be a considerable improvement over the 128.

I would also prefer the 512gb in case I end up using more space than I thought I would, but the extra $270+tax (educational discount) is a hefty price just for more storage. A usb 3.0 portable hard drive would give more space at a lower price, but then I may have to worry how battery life is affected by keeping a portable hard drive connected...

2013 MBAir - 256GB v 512GB Flash Storage

I have always maxed out the configuration on the MBAirs I have purchased thinking rightly or wrongly along with the better performance I'd command the higher resale value. I usually upgrade each year. This year however I noticed that I wasn't receiving any better an offer on eBay for my 512GB flash storage than those with 256GBs.

I am currently a day or two away from receiving the 2013 MBAir and I have an uneasy rumble in my stomach. The reason is that I decided to go for the 256GB flash storage as I can't see the point in paying an extra $300/£240 for storage I actually don't need myself. This is because I have a Promise Pegasus for storage and as my daily files are stored in the cloud I don't need a huge internal drive, just enough to keep all running efficiently.

Back to my stomach rumbling...have I made a mistake? Should I have upgraded to 512GBs of Flash? Or have I made the wise decision and saved $300/£240? Comments most welcome.

If you're not going to use the space, I'd get the 256gb. Like you, I used to get 'Ultimate' MBA's, but after seeing that the highest end MBA sell for almost the same as less loaded models, I no longer don't buy based on resale. In fact, the basic models have the best resale value %.

Thank you for your feedback. It is reassuring to hear you have had the same concerns and reasoning.

In response to some earlier posts, I just received my 11" and it has a 256 SanDisk.. Tested around 560 write and 750 read. So apparently it's back to the ol guessing game.. Except with Samsung/SanDisk... Oy lol

I purchased the 512 only because I would have had to order the 256 and I wanted it 'now'. :D

Didn't really comprehend how much storage 512 really is in the moment. Between the tremendous capacity of the 256, still a lot, and the trend of cloud services and ever increasing public internet speeds I would go with the 256. My first external drive was 500GB and I thought that was HUGE.

Are most of the MBA's coming in now Sandisk? Seems disingenuous to stack the review machines with the superior Samsung SSD's and then ship out the majority of MBA's with the slower Sandisks...

I bought my maxed out 13" Air days after WWDC. Mine has the SanDisk SSDs and an LG display. That pretty much blows your conspiracy theory.
