thanks everyone, i think its become clear to me that whilst having an ipad ora tablet in gerneral for that matter may be comfortable it is not a device which i specifically need for aynthing.

its nice to have but with an ultraportable laptop and a tight budget it would be an unnecessary expenditure for me :)

Nobody "needs" an iPad. What matters is that you appear to want one. If you can afford it, just buy it and try it out for two weeks. You can return it if it's not worth it to you. But if it is worth it, you've just spent your money on something you want, even if you don't strictly need it.

I was a huge fan of the iPad. And the. One day I realized that I had no need for it at all and that carrying it around with me all the time did nothing but add additional weight to strain my back. Between my MBA 11' and iPhone, I didn't really have a need for an iPad. I picked up a cheap Kindle Paperwhite for reading and that was that.

I can definitely see the temptation to get an iPad mini. Seems like a beautiful device. But it just doesn't have a place in my workflow.

because the title is trolling for a person to click on the thread and read his post
I'd prefer to make a positive assumption as to to OP's intentions. To much paranoia on this forum as it is.

While I was pursuing my degree I used my 13" MBA on a daily basis and rarely picked up my iPad 2, now that I've graduated Just the opposite is true. The MBA is a is far more portable than any other laptop I've used but is not quite the sitting on my couch surfing the web reading email experience that the iPad is.

Yeah totally agree. But I'm a succour for Apple stuff so I'm trying the Mini. My cheap iPad replacement is the Nexus 7 and I probably use it the most of all my gadgets when I'm at home. The Mini will have to be good to replace this!

i just find no apparent good reason for me to get an ipad, but as has been pointed out i wouldnt mind the increase of comfort an ipad would bring to my life.

i guess if i was working it would be a no brainer as its almost in the area of impulse buy territory for ppl with an average income, not for me though :(

ill probably yield after a while and get the mini, bread and water for me for the next few months then ;)

i think what this thread has shown me is that rationally i cannot justify purchasing an ipad.

I have a 13" MBP and an 11" MBA. Was thinking of buying an iPad this summer but decided on the Air instead. I'm pleased I did as it's a far better second computer. The iPad is way too limited for me. It's good for playing Angry Birds but that's about it really. I don't like the fact that it has no USB/SD slots/ports, no Flash, can only run iOS, you need an app to do everything, can't multitask, can't run Final Cut Pro or anything high-end, is rubbish for typing... I could go on. Even Windoze 95 could multitask and that's saying something!

I use an MBA at home and I use an iPad to travel they don't even come near each other in the same needs or the same uses. Both are absolutely essential to me, try using an MBA standing up showing people a PDF at the job site or on a plane, an iPad works much better. But at home when I'm actually doing real computing, and composing, creating content an MBA works much better. I see no conflict between them at all. For example , I write a 100 Keynote slide presentation on an MBA, I show it on a ipad....

I have both an 11" MBA (original model) and an iPad and use them both but for different things.

I had the original 13" MBA and bought the bluetooth keyboard hoping to use it as a laptop replacement when traveling. I tried a couple of trips but it just didn't work that well (for me) Even after "multitasking" was added to IOS I would often loose a Citrix/Remote Desktop/LogMeIn session if I switched over to read an email or pdf.

The 11" MBA is not that much heavier than an iPad + wireless keyboard so that is my "traveling computer" now.

I use the iPad whenever I am not at a desk/table, e.g. in an easy chair or on the couch or just "out and about" in town (or in bed). And for that, I think the Mini will work just as well and She Who Must Be Obeyed will soon have new (for Her) iPad :)

I have an 11" MBA and too have been wondering what an iPad can help me with. I was waiting for the mini announcement before making any purchases, but I still think the full size iPad is ideal.

I am a traveling nutrition counselor and think the iPad would be more convenient than my MBA, especially for the "other things". Sure, my MBA is great for emailing back and forth and spreadsheets, etc, but what if I wanna do other things like show a short video clip or pictures or food models or something? I am thinking the iPad can be more "inviting" in these instances and of course with the iPad I can still be somewhat productive with emailing, spreadsheets, documents etc.

The iPad mini is VERY enticing, especially pricewise, and looks, but the retina display is gorgeous and well worth it (and also something the MBA does not have).
