Except for the screen size which is the biggest con. How is the performance between the air and pro in daily tasks and gaming? Is it worth it to trade in my MacBook Pro at a loss to exchange it for the Air? My biggest reason is better battery life and less heat with no fans. Also if I trade it back to Apple what happens to my Apple Care+?

I was discussing something similar, in another tread. Someone mentioned that I am a 'Tech chaser'.
As an IT person and gadget users, to be honest, they are right, they are spot on.

I think the bigger questions are, do you need it, and does you current device do what you need it to do? Not trying to sway your decision, more asking you to consider alternatives.

My current device does what I want it for. It is a bit heavier than I like but not as heavy as my old Dell XPS laptop from 2010. I am just concerned about better battery life and cooler temps. Also I don't care about running Windows as I still have a Windows desktop. Running iOS apps seems nice though.

Re the Applecare+ I don't think you can take over what time you have left to another computer - you have to buy it again.

Just go to watch Max Tech on YouTube. They have the best comparison videos.

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" (i9 2.4GHz, 32GB) and an M1 MacBook Air (8 Core, 16GB) and there is no discernible difference in performance between the two - which amazes me on a daily bases. In some cases, the M1 feels 'snappier' too. And on top of the performance, the Air never gets more than just lightly warm - not once did it get remotely hot - and with no cooling fan. If there was a 16" MacBook option with an M1 chip, I'd own it. It would be cool to the touch and perform the same, if not better. Mind you, I don't do any video work.

Just for anyone interested ... I know it's not MBP 13/16 ... and there are loads of Geekbench scores out there for the new M1 but this is comparing my new MBA with my older 2020 MBA i7 .

The new MBA is an 8GB M1 (with 8 core CPU and 8 core GPU) ... Geekbench 5 shows it as follows :

Single core 1731 Multi core 7548

Not many people seem to have shown an i7 MBA with 16GB Ram (the top spec available) early 2020 MBA

My 'old' MBA June 2020 with 1.2 i7 and 16GB Ram :

Single core 1234 Multi core 3195

Very impressive but the most noticeable difference ... I'm still on 86% after using the new MBA all day and it is cold. The older one got quite warm running Geekbench (not a surprise, but the new one is so cold it is like it isn't turned on !) and the battery was well down.

I can't wait for our new 16Gb MBP to arrive and in due course the 16 inch when it gets released will, I am sure, be stunning if it runs cool easily.

You'd do far better financially to sell it yourself. Apple's trade-in offers are notorious ripoffs!

My wife just got the M1 MBA. While the speed is impressive, the screen is too small for my needs. I'm hanging on to my 16" MBP until the Apple Silicon version is released (hopefully early) next year.

Not a 16" 2019 Macbook Pro but I just did a GeekBench 5 on my 2018 Macbook Pro 15" i9 32gb ram and on the new Macbook Air M1 Chip 8GBM 8GPU.

Macbook Pro
Single Core - 1116
Multi Core - 5168

Macbook Air
Single Core - 1736
Multi Core - 7679

These comparisons are just nutso, and at least for those of us who are simply using our laptops for general work or school use, the long battery alone makes them so worth the upgrade. The chip performance really does seem like it’s next level too.

My only concern is the screen brightness on the MBA. I’ve been using my iPad Pro 12.9” 2018 for the past couple of years, and its 600 nits is overkill except when I’m outside working. But to go to 400 nits max seems like a considerable drop, although it is more than ~300 nits that my old 2013 rMBP 15” can muster, so maybe it’s not as much of an issue as I imagine. I have been thinking I’d get a new Pro M1, but I loved my old 2011 MBA, for it’s shape, low weight and performance, so going back to an Air is more appealing.

I keep my brightness down to low about 1 to 2 bars. Matter of fact I hate over brightness and I have it set low on my TV, Phone, Desktop PC and iPad.
