I am going to have to keep this machine for a while.
So will upgrade the 64GB SSD soon.

but is there a thunderbolt 1 adaptor to give me say more USB/HDMI/Ethernet/etc?

I see many for thunderbolt 2 and newer but will these work with the original?
Is original too slow compared to thunderbolt 2 to support such a device?

any help/advice much appreciated.

I tried the OWC thunderbolt 2 dock on my 2013 MBA and could not get it to work reliably so I returned it. I wanted to use my MBA for video editing but it needed an additional port to be able to connect everything. My issue was the display, it worked intermittently. To be fair, I only had one thunderbolt cable so it's possible that was the problem. But I wasted too much time screwing around with it and felt it would be a continuing annoyance.

So in the end I got a 2012 quad core mini and dedicated that to video, which was a better solution for me.

I have a thunder bolt to VGA/DVI/HDMI adaptor but since high Sierra update only DVI works.

all worked fine in Sierra.

2012 MacBook Air is thunderbolt/mini display port not thunderbolt 2.
