So i've not plugged my MacBook into my monitor for a while, but after attempting to tonight, it wasn't working. Or well, it was poorly.

Previously, once in a while i had red noise if it was a bad connection, that was usually solved with a little jiggling around but now its unusable, and after a few seconds the display goes blank and the monitor makes a distinct humming noise that does not occur when plugged into my desktop.

What could have caused it? i'm using an official Apple dongle incidentally.

[update] So, there was a burning smell too, so, something is definitely going wrong.
