Sometimes the Air gets a chip first, sometimes the Pro gets a chip first, sometimes the iPad Pro gets a chip first.

I don't think we need to assume a grand plan by Apple or anything.

In this case, I assume the M4 is low yield in the beginning due to an entirely new chip structure. So it makes 100% sense to first put in a low volume product. Apple sells way more MacBook Air/Pro than iPad Pro.

I think the M3 15" MBA can do this. But yeah I'll hang on to my M2 15" until it kicks the bucket, these computers are just "fast enough" at this point.

It can but you have to sacrifice the internal screen while doing so. Effectively meaning it's still a max of 2 displays. It's technicality but past Macbook Air generations have never had issues connecting to >2 external displays while keeping the internal display running.
