Lots of people I know, mac and PC users alike (and these are mostly people who don't usually care about their computers like we do on this board) absolutely drool over the Air. If you compare specs and whatnot it doesn't seem like a good idea, but most people who see it are in love.

I don't see how you can mention the eee in the same breath as the air. It has an 8" screen and a 900 mhz celeron. It's a completely different product.

I guess my point on the Eee was regarding the pricing of smaller computers. I agree that the Eee doesn't hold a candle to the MBA.

But I regress, the drool factor over the Air is great, but so is the drool factor of a Lotus Elise. Beautiful, small, but practical? I know its cliche to compare cars with computers, but I think its appropriate. I know it is lame to say "Why didn't Apple do this..." or "Why didn't Apple do that..." and that isn't what I'm trying to say, cause they're the geniuses not me. I have no problem with the existence of the Air, I just don't necessarily think it's enough to be considered so noteworthy.

But if the "drool factor" of the Air makes it a well-selling product, then apple has achieved their goal, haven't they? It's "noteworthy" when it piques people's interest, which (in my experience) it has done.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't buy an Air because I fundamentally agree with you about its limitations (and it's comparative weaknesses, compared to the macbook). But I'm not sure what the point is of arguing about its practicality. It obviously works for a good number of people, so in that sense, it's "practical" for at least some buyers, isn't it?

Yes, practicality I guess stems beyond my own little world (although I have a hard time comprehending it). Go on, enjoy your MBA. But if this thread turns into one of those "Should I wait to buy" threads I'm gonna go nuclear.

a desktop replacement isn't meant to be portable. If you want portability go with the macbook air but if you want a desktop replacement I'd get the 17in macbook pro

Is this true? I think many (most?) people who own a Macbook or a Macbook Pro use it as a "desktop replacement". My Macbook is my only computer, and I carry it around with me regularly. I like that it is significantly thinner (and thus more portable) than the iBooks it replaced.

Yep

I use my 12" powerbook the same way, having previously owned 15" and 17" powerbooks.

For most of us, Macbooks can be considered desktop replacements. I don't play games nor do I do 3D design.

I see the MBA as a complementary device for business people on the go a LOT. You have a nice desktop at home (maybe an iMac or a Mac Pro) with a MBA for traveling.

A MacBook and an external display or a MacBook Pro wouldn't cost much more, and either one would make you way happier for Photoshop use compared to the Air. Even for day to day though, the Air has limitations. It is simply not designed, nor does it function well, as a desktop replacement. The MacBook Pro, especially, does.

Well said. The MBP is certainly very good looking in its own right and would provide you with much more power at around the same price point.
