Unless you are doing serious video editing or serious animation, the MBA is powerful enough to be a replacement for a desktop. I would suggest you spend a bit more money if you want it to have a really powerful desktop replacement. Get the top of the line build to order model, (8G RAM, 500G SSD, Haswell i7)
Then fetch a thunderbuld to HDMI cable so that you can hook it up to any wide screen display as you desire, also get bluetooth keyboard and mouse,
this will save you from the clutter of cables on your desk.

The rMBP 13" is a nice machine with a beautiful display and a more capable GPU. CPU-wise, it's only marginally better than the MBA (i5 vs i5 or i7 vs i7); only a few percents as reported here:

I think the HDMI port and Retina Display is good enough to warrant the nugatory weight difference. The small CPU boost is just a little extra.

I think Apple will phase out all non-retina devices by 2016. They priced the 13' retina Macbook pro to the point where people would buy the non-retina Macbook Pro just for the superdrive. Soon, iMacs will be converted and then Macbook airs. However, I don't think the Airs will be updated to retinas for at least another 2-3 years.

Yep it is for me.

As much as I love iPads, I can't do much on them. I NEED a keyboard. I'm a typist and I do a lot of online talking and typing and am very slow on a touch screen. I have huge hands and fingers and a keyboard is much better for my needs. Yes, I can use a keyboard I know, but in my way of thinking if I'm gonna add that I might as well get a laptop anyway.

I have a '13 2012 and at some point might try an '11 2013 for portability in the future. It is a great machine. I do photo editing but nothing with video short of uploading to YouTube of videos I've taken in QuickTime Player or rarely iMovie.
