My MBA has the clicking and it is quite annoying but when I am using Windows through Bootcamp, the clicking occurs less frequently and is not as noticeable. Does anyone know why this is? Does XP access the hdd differently than OS X.

Yes, it does. Remember that OS X and Windows under Boot Camp will be accessing different partition types (Mac OS Extended Journaled vs. NTFS or FAT32), and the way that data is written and read is somewhat different. If one OS or partition type keeps the drive heads from being parked as frequently, the number of clicks will be less.
