After disconnecting my Macbook Air from an external display the internal display doesn't recognize it's disconnected and won't show the dock.

Does anyone know if there's a safe way to disconnect my external monitor or if there is another way to make the dock re-appear other than restarting?

Maybe try going into System Preferences-Dock and toggle the Automatically Hide and show the Dock? I'm wondering how you currently have it set.. I don't auto-hide mine, and I don't have an issue. I'm always plugging and unplugging mine..
