Hi, I have the new MacBook Air M1 8/512 attached to a DELL U2520d via USB-C that also charges the Mac and I have two issue that my old MacBook Pro 2016 has not:

1) if I shut down the Mac while attached to the monitor the Mac every 3/4 seconds make a sound like when it starts to charge. The monitor loops from safe mode to usb-c attached state.

2) if I turn on the monitor with the Mac already attached the Mac every 3/4 seconds make a sound like when it starts to charge and Big Sur doesn't boot. The monitor loops from safe mode to usb-c attached state.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue? Is there a solution for this?

Thanks.
Ciao,
Paolo

I've got a Dell U3818DW.

Dell monitors don't support Power Delivery correctly - which causes compatibility issues with Macs. The only way I've managed to get a Mac to work correctly with Dell monitors that support PD is to ensure the Mac is fully charged before plugging it in.

Dell have said they're not going to fix the issue.

Really? do you have a link regarding DELL statement?

I have the issue only when Mac is already attached to the external monitor. If I start the MacBook Air, turn on the monitor and then attach it to the Mac all work properly.

Thank you

It's all over the Dell forums:

Huh.

Disappointing but good to know.

I've liked Dell monitors (and currently happy with my U2719D), but this makes it clear that I shan't consider them in the future - especially as my next monitor will provide USBC connection/power.

Yes, I have used DELL monitor for years and I have just bought this U2520D this spring but this issue would be really annoying. I hope Big Sur 11.1 will fix this for my model since I don't have any problem with my MacBook Pro 13 under Catalina.

I also confirm that I have attached the MacBook Air with not a full charge and when it reaches it goes in something like a sleep mode with a black screen on the monitor 😕. After, clicking mouse, it comes back and reload all apps...

I have the same issues with Dell U3818DW. I am considering to return the monitor and get something else.... Dell can kiss my behind!
