I want a hardshell case to protect my 11 inch macbook air from little dings and scratches but most of them out there seem pretty expensive. The 11 inch isn't that big so $50 for a Speck Hardshell seems kinda crazy especially since that's the same price they charge for a hardshell for a 17"!! any other good, high quality alternatives?

Have you tried Amazon or ebay? I picked up a $50 one for $20 from Amazon. Just check all the buying options, Mine was a used like new never used one. On my other mac air (last years) I got a $10 one a couple of months ago. You just have to shop around:D

I think they're about $30 on Amazon for a Speck now.

I don't think the size should be a reason for the price to be lower. I own Speck cases for my MBP 17" and MBA 11". The case for the MBA 11" looks more difficult to manufacture because it is significantly thinner. I'm very happy with the quality of the Speck case.
